Die. Melissa said we are going to die. I try to shake that out of my head but I can't.
I walk over and plop myself down on Meredith's bed. She's half asleep, half talking to Anna, half reading. I try to be friendly and smile at her, but by the looks of it, I failed.
"What do you want?" Meredith mutters, focusing more on her book than me.
"I wanted to apologize, actually." I say.
"You? Apologizing? Wow, this is big!" Meredith exclaims.
"Shh!" Not the entire world has to know!" I laugh. Meredith smiles. "Look, I wanted to say I'm sorry for calling Lybrethium a fake." I pause. "I believe you now."
"It's ok." Meredith says. "I know, it is kind of hard to take in at first."
"And you are an elf? I mean, that's cool!"
"Really? You think?' Meredith says. She tucks her hair behind her ear. I still can't get over the fact that I hadn't noticed her ears before.

While walking to breakfast the next morning, I realize we slept the night without going to Lybrethium. I don't know whether I should be relieved or not. I remember what Melissa said yesterday and maybe it is a good thing we didn't go that night.
When we reach the cafeteria, I decide to sit with Anna and Melissa and Meredith this time. I ignore Jesse waving me over. But Melissa isn't there.
"Where's Melissa?" I ask.
"I am not sure. I didn't see her in the dorm this morning either."
"Maybe she went for a walk or something." As soon as I say it I realize it is not true. Meredith changes the subject and starts talking about the creatures in Lybrethium like unicorns and trolls. Anna joins in. All I can think about is, Melissa could be in danger. I don't know why. I just have this feeling.
I slip away from Meredith and Anna's interesting conversation and head outside. Just as I walk out of the Cafeteria doors, I see her. She's with someone else, sitting right at the edge of the cliff. He looks like a teenager – around sixteen – and he has olive skin like Melissa's and dark brown hair. He is wearing all black; jeans, shirt, leather jacket. At first their conversation is calm, Melissa is smiling, but then he starts yelling at her and his face turns red and Melissa looks like she'll cry. I can't hear them, but something is wrong.
Suddenly, I sneeze. Both Melissa and the guy turn to look at my direction. I quickly kneel down behind a bush. When I look up again, the guy is gone and Melissa is walking towards me.
"Who was that?"
"A guy."
"No duh!"
"A friend..." Melissa walks past me and I follow her to the cafeteria. She sits down and I sit next to her.
"Where were you guys?" Anna asks.
"Fresh air." Melissa says before I can do anything. Her eyes stare at me, willing me not to say anything. And for some reason, I don't.
