You sat idly by at the dining room table, watching your childhood best friend and mother cook dinner together. You didn't know whether or not it was because Suguru genuinely enjoyed this kind of stuff, or if he was just racking brownie points up with your mother.

Your mother decided that to celebrate you and Suguru moving up in school, and it being your first day, wanted to treat you both to your favorite food; Zaru Soba. The recipe isn't the most convoluted one out there, but it never fails to make you happy and full. That was also probably another reason why Suguru was so eager to help her out.

You could still remember the first time the two of you ate dinner together.

A few days after meeting Suguru Geto, you quickly got attached to the boy. He was mostly aloof and didn't talk much, but that didn't bother you in the slightest. After all, he was your only friend.

"Geto!!" You waved to him one afternoon after his family took him out with them for their errands. He slowly looked at you and gave you a quizzical look, wondering what had you so excited.

His mother uttered something you couldn't hear and left him behind to go into their own estate house, no doubt to say that he should humor you and be nice. You hopped down from your porch and let your little feet take the lead in your pursuit of talking to Suguru.

"Would you want to come eat dinner with my family tonight?" You asked, your little smile accentuating your dimples. Suguru couldn't deny that it was hard to already say no to you, despite the short time you both have known each other.

"I don't see why not. My parents won't be cooking tonight. They're leaving for a business trip,"

"Perfect! In the meantime, we can play!" Suguru didn't truly understand your hyperactiveness, especially when it came to him, but he didn't mind it. The small gestures of you inviting him to dinner and just the words you spoke let him know you enjoyed his company, and that was a feeling he liked a little too much.

"Okay, whatever you want."

After that, it was a ritual for Suguru to come over for dinner almost every week, and the two children played together almost every day for years. The two of you got to watch each other grow into the teenagers you are today, changing and becoming people that both parents would come to admire.

Well, they admired that it seemed it was set in stone for the two of you to get married. You didn't like to think about that fact; despite your love for Suguru, you still didn't know if that love went past platonic. The thought of marriage itself was scary enough, but with your childhood best friend? You didn't know. There was no instruction manual or recovery treatment for this. You had nothing to go off of, because well, there was no one else in your life but him. He was the only constant throughout your sick childhood besides your parents.

How could you tell if you liked him as a friend or more if you've never had anyone else to feel for?

"Okay! Dinner is ready! Y/n, will you get your father? He's outside," You blinked from your daze and nodded. You got up from the table as Suguru and your mother prepped the table to hand everyone their food. The arrangement was always your parents next to each other, while you and Suguru next to each other.

You opened the sliding paper door to see your father sitting on the porch, gazing up at the sky. He turned to you and gave a soft smile. You smiled back and glanced up at the stars. Sometimes you forget how small you are compared to the eons of galaxies just above your head. The cosmos twinkled as your mind came up with different constellations formed in your mind.

You looked back over at your dad, "Hey Dad, mom says dinner is ready." He nodded and stood up from where he sat, still looking up at the sky that was slowly turning purplish hues in contrast with the reds and oranges that melted below the horizon.
