"We have to go back," says Eve, speaking to the closest alien. Without an argument, the ship returns to the explosion site, cutting through the leftover vapor. A tiny hole opens in the wall of the spacecraft and the scroll sucks back inside, looking none the worse for wear as it drifts to the floor.

"Now, to destroy this," says Eve, picking up the scroll. "Even though magick is in decline, the Antecedents' paradoxical meddling has sent stubborn roots of unstable energy burrowing deep into the physical realm. This imperfect force could tear reality apart if unchecked. We have no choice but to force magick away from the Earth...to put both planes of existence on parallel paths so that they're not so entangled.

I shake my head. "This sounds risky."

"This scroll is last vestige of The Five's efforts. Destroying it will send magick back where it belongs. It will also displace untold magical beings but we have no other options."

"But you were raised in the magickal realm," I say. "You're carrying two souls. What does that mean for you?"

"I...I don't know," says Eve.

The ship shakes as if colliding directly against a wall. All the aliens standing around us sink to their knees in pain.
