"Oh, Amber! Our friends from Royal Prep will be there, won't they?" I said, brimming with excitement. Amber nodded, but her expression hinted at something deeper—like she was longing for a better answer.
"Alright, Sofia. If that's what you say," she replied, her tone soft yet resigned.
I raised an eyebrow, confused and intrigued by her response. After school, we climbed into the carriage where James was already waiting, his usual grin plastered across his face.
As we began our journey home, James leaned forward and asked, "So, did you two get an invitation to a certain ball, by any chance?"
Amber’s eyes lit up. "Yes, James. We did!" she replied, her voice bright with enthusiasm. "I can't wait to see our old friends again."
"Right? But I think Sofia is even more excited to meet..." James began, smirking mischievously.
But before he could finish, the carriage pulled up in front of the castle. Amber leaned toward me as we stepped out, her voice dropping to a teasing whisper. "Well... some things are worth waiting for, aren’t they?"
Mom was waiting at the front door when we arrived. "How was school, dear?" she asked as I handed her the invitation.
"There's an annual school ball happening next week," I explained.
Her face lit up with delight. "Would you and Amber like to have your gowns tailored for the event?"
Amber squealed with excitement. "Of course, we would, Mom!"
James, still lingering nearby, folded his arms and pouted. "Hey, what about me?"
We all laughed.
The day of the ball finally arrived, and Amber and I were busy preparing. My sister loved her accessories, and I had my favorite too—my amulet. It felt like the perfect finishing touch, the icing on the cake.
Amber stepped out of the changing room first, and my breath caught. She wore a stunning deep green gown adorned with pearls and shimmering glitter. The boat-neck cut highlighted her collarbones beautifully, and her heels sparkled as brightly as the stars. She looked radiant—like all eyes would be on her tonight.
"Amber! Your gown is gorgeous! I love it!" I said, my voice full of admiration.
"Why, thank you, Sofia! Yours is lovely too!" she replied with a warm smile.
I glanced at myself in the mirror. My dark violet gown was adorned with silver diamonds, the glitter cascading from top to bottom. My silver heels sparkled as if enchanted. I felt magical, like I’d stepped out of a fairytale.
When we arrived at the ball, the grand hall was a spectacle of light and music. James quickly found Zandar; Amber was already laughing with Hildegard and Clio. As for me, I wandered through the crowd, my eyes scanning the room.
Somehow, I felt like I was looking for someone...
"Sofia!"
