The scent of freshly cut grass and the rhythmic thwack of tennis balls filled the air as Zhou Shiyu hurried across the court, her sneakers squeaking against the pristine surface. It had been a week since the disastrous incident with the errant tennis ball, but the memory of Wangyi's icy glare still lingered in Zhou Shiyu's mind.

As she joined her teammates for practice, Zhou Shiyu couldn't help but steal occasional glances towards the school's music building, where the elusive Wangyi could often be found. The guitarist of the school's acclaimed band, HII, had an almost mythical aura about her, with rumors swirling about her standoffish nature and nearly impenetrable walls.

"Hey, Zhou Shiyu!" Her teammate, Lin Mei, called out, snapping her back to attention. "Coach is calling for us to start the drills. You daydreaming again?"

Zhou Shiyu offered an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I was just...thinking about something." Or rather, someone. She took a deep breath and refocused her energy on the task at hand, determined to prove her worth on the tennis team.

As the practice progressed, Zhou Shiyu found herself growing increasingly distracted. Her eyes would often drift towards the distant music building, her curiosity about Wangyi refusing to be quelled. She couldn't help but wonder what lay beneath the girl's aloof exterior.

"Zhou Shiyu! Pay attention!" The coach's stern voice jolted her back to reality, and she hastily returned her focus to the drill at hand, chastising herself for her wandering mind.

Later that day, as Zhou Shiyu made her way to the cafeteria for lunch, she spotted Wangyi sitting alone at a small table, surrounded by an invisible barrier that seemed to ward off any potential intruders. Taking a deep breath, Zhou Shiyu steeled her resolve and approached the table, determined to at least make an attempt at conversation.

"Um, hi, Wangyi," she said tentatively, offering a friendly smile. "Do you mind if I join you?"

Wangyi's eyes narrowed, and she regarded Zhou Shiyu with a cool, calculating gaze. "I'd prefer to eat alone," she replied flatly, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Zhou Shiyu's smile faltered slightly, but she refused to back down. "Oh, come on, it gets a little lonely, doesn't it? I promise I won't bother you too much." She pulled out the chair and sat down, ignoring Wangyi's disapproving stare.

For a moment, they sat in awkward silence, the tension palpable between them. Zhou Shiyu racked her brain, trying to find a way to break the ice, but Wangyi's icy demeanor made it increasingly difficult.

"So, uh, how's the band going?" Zhou Shiyu ventured, desperate to find a common ground. "I hear you guys are really good."

Wangyi's eyebrows rose slightly, a hint of surprise flickering across her features. "It's fine," she responded, her tone clipped and guarded.

Zhou Shiyu nodded, undeterred. "That's great! I'd love to come to one of your performances sometime. I bet it's really cool to be in a band."

Wangyi's eyes narrowed once more, and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "I don't see why you're so interested in me or the band," she said, a subtle edge of defensiveness creeping into her voice.

"Oh, I don't know," Zhou Shiyu replied, her tone lighthearted. "Maybe I just want to get to know you a little better. You seem...interesting."

Wangyi scoffed, her lips curving into a faint sneer. "I hardly think I'm the type of person you'd want to get to know." She took a sip of her water, her gaze flickering away from Zhou Shiyu's.

A shadow of disappointment passed over Zhou Shiyu's features, but she refused to let Wangyi's dismissive attitude deter her. "Well, I think you might be surprised. I'm a pretty good listener, you know."

Wangyi's expression remained impassive, and she seemed to contemplate Zhou Shiyu's words for a moment. "I'll keep that in mind," she said finally, her tone softening ever so slightly.

Zhou Shiyu felt a glimmer of hope at Wangyi's response, and she decided to push her luck a little further. "Great! And, you know, if you ever want to talk or, I don't know, hang out or something, I'm always around." She flashed Wangyi a bright, encouraging smile.

Wangyi's brow furrowed, and she opened her mouth as if to respond, but before she could, a voice suddenly cut through the air.

"Well, well, if it isn't the ice queen," a taunting female voice rang out. "And she's actually talking to someone. Color me surprised."

Zhou Shiyu turned to see a tall, athletic-looking girl striding towards their table, a mocking grin plastered on her face. It was Xia Mei, a member of the tennis team who had made no secret of her disdain for Zhou Shiyu's enthusiastic and bubbly personality.

"What do you want, Xia Mei?" Wangyi's voice was laced with disdain, and she fixed the newcomer with a withering glare.

Xia Mei's grin widened as she leaned against the table, her eyes narrowing as she regarded Wangyi. "Oh, nothing much. Just wondered what the resident ice queen was up to, cozying up to the new girl." She cast a disparaging look in Zhou Shiyu's direction.

Zhou Shiyu felt her cheeks flush with a mix of embarrassment and indignation. "I was just trying to be friendly," she said, her voice wavering slightly.

Xia Mei let out a harsh laugh. "Friendly? With Wangyi? Good luck with that, Zhou Shiyu. Everyone knows she's not interested in making friends." She shook her head and turned her attention back to Wangyi. "You're wasting your time, you know. No one wants to be around the Ice Queen."

Wangyi's expression hardened, and she rose from her seat, her chair scraping against the floor. "If you're quite finished, Xia Mei, I'd like to return to my lunch in peace." Her voice was cold and commanding, brooking no argument.

Xia Mei held up her hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, I'm going. Just thought I'd save you the trouble, Wangyi. Wouldn't want you to get your hopes up." With a final disdainful glance, she turned and sauntered away, leaving a tense silence in her wake.

Zhou Shiyu sat in stunned silence, her heart sinking as she watched the exchange. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for Wangyi, who seemed to bear the brunt of Xia Mei's cruel taunts with a stoic facade.

After a moment, Wangyi slowly sank back into her chair, her expression unreadable. She glanced at Zhou Shiyu, her gaze softening ever so slightly. "You should probably go," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Zhou Shiyu hesitated, torn between respecting Wangyi's wishes and her desire to offer some form of comfort. "I... I don't mind staying, if you want," she said tentatively.

Wangyi shook her head, her eyes averted. "It's better if you don't. Xia Mei is right – I'm not the kind of person you want to be around."

Zhou Shiyu opened her mouth to protest, but the raw vulnerability in Wangyi's expression gave her pause. With a resigned nod, she rose from her seat, her heart heavy. "Okay, if that's what you want. But, Wangyi, if you ever change your mind..." She let the offer hang in the air, hoping that Wangyi might one day be willing to let her in.

As she made her way across the cafeteria, Zhou Shiyu couldn't shake the lingering feeling of disappointment and concern for the enigmatic Wangyi. The encounter with Xia Mei had only served to deepen the mystery that surrounded the aloof guitarist, and Zhou Shiyu found herself more determined than ever to uncover the truth behind Wangyi's guarded facade.
