The school cafeteria was bustling with activity as students mingled and chatted during their lunch break. Zhou Shiyu scanned the crowded tables, her eyes searching for a familiar face. She finally spotted Wangyi sitting alone, her usual spot at the corner of the room. Taking a deep breath, Zhou made her way over, determined to continue her attempts at befriending the elusive girl.
"Hey, Wangyi!" Zhou greeted cheerfully, placing her tray on the table. "Do you mind if I join you?"
Wangyi looked up from the book she had been reading, her expression neutral. "I suppose," she replied hesitantly, shifting slightly to make room.
Zhou plopped down, a bright smile on her face. "So, what are you reading? Anything interesting?" she asked, trying to make conversation.
Wangyi eyed her warily. "It's just a book about music theory. Not exactly riveting material for someone like you." Her tone was tinged with a hint of condescension.
Undeterred, Zhou dug into her lunch, taking a bite before responding. "You'd be surprised. I actually find that kind of stuff fascinating. Music has always been a passion of mine, even if I'm not as talented as you are in the band."
Wangyi's eyebrows rose slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing her features. "Is that so?" she murmured, a trace of curiosity in her voice.
Zhou nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely! I may not be able to play an instrument, but I love listening to music and learning about the theory behind it." She paused, tilting her head slightly. "In fact, I'd love to hear more about HII, if you don't mind sharing."
For a moment, Wangyi seemed caught off guard by Zhou's genuine interest. She hesitated, her fingers idly tracing the cover of her book. "Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to tell you a bit about the band," she conceded, a hint of reluctance in her voice.
As Wangyi began to speak, Zhou leaned in, her eyes shining with attentiveness. She listened intently as Wangyi described the origins of HII, their musical influences, and the various challenges they faced as a student band. Zhou's genuine fascination and respectful demeanor seemed to gradually put Wangyi at ease, allowing her to open up a little more than usual.
"So, what instrument do you play?" Zhou asked, once Wangyi had finished her explanation.
"I'm the guitarist," Wangyi replied, a subtle note of pride in her voice.
"That's so cool!" Zhou exclaimed. "I'd love to hear you play sometime, if you're ever willing to give me a private performance."
Wangyi's eyes widened, and for a moment, she appeared flustered. "I... I don't know about that," she stammered, her cheeks flushing slightly.
Zhou giggled at Wangyi's reaction. "I'm just teasing, you know. But I really would enjoy listening to you play, if you ever feel comfortable with it."
Wangyi nodded, her posture relaxing a bit. "We'll see," she murmured, her gaze returning to her book.
The two girls fell into a comfortable silence, each focused on their respective tasks. Zhou couldn't help but steal the occasional glance at Wangyi, marveling at the way her fingers deftly turned the pages of her book. She found herself admiring the girl's focus and precision, traits that seemed to extend to her musical abilities as well.
After a few minutes, Zhou cleared her throat, breaking the stillness. "Hey, Wangyi, I was wondering... Do you have any plans this weekend?" she asked tentatively.
Wangyi looked up, her expression guarded. "Why do you ask?"
"Well, I was thinking that maybe we could hang out or something. You know, get to know each other a little better," Zhou suggested, her tone warm and hopeful.
Wangyi's brow furrowed, and for a moment, Zhou feared she had overstepped. "I'm... not sure that's a good idea," Wangyi replied, her voice hesitant.
Zhou's face fell, disappointment etching itself across her features. "Oh, I see. No worries, it was just a thought," she said, trying to keep her tone light.
Wangyi seemed to sense Zhou's shift in mood, and her expression softened ever so slightly. "It's not that I don't appreciate the offer," she began, her words slow and measured. "It's just... I prefer to keep to myself, you know? I'm not really the type to socialize a lot."
Zhou nodded, a small, understanding smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I get it. No pressure at all. I'm just happy we were able to chat like this today."
Wangyi's gaze flickered, and for a brief moment, Zhou caught a glimpse of something akin to gratitude in her eyes. "Yes, well... I suppose it wasn't as... unpleasant as I had expected," Wangyi admitted, her tone reluctant but not unkind.
The bell signaling the end of the lunch period rang, and the two girls stood up, gathering their belongings. As they made their way out of the cafeteria, Zhou couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. She may not have managed to secure a weekend hang-out with Wangyi, but their conversation had been a small victory in her ongoing quest to befriend the aloof girl.
Just as they were about to part ways, Zhou turned to Wangyi, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Hey, Wangyi? If you ever change your mind about that private performance, you know where to find me," she said with a playful wink.
Wangyi's cheeks flushed, and she quickly averted her gaze, muttering something unintelligible under her breath as she hurried off to her next class.
Zhou chuckled to herself, her heart feeling a little lighter. She knew that breaking through Wangyi's icy exterior would be no easy feat, but she was determined to keep trying. After all, there was a person worth knowing beneath that guarded facade, and Zhou was more curious than ever to uncover the real Wangyi.
As she headed to her own class, Zhou couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the next time she would cross paths with the enigmatic girl. Perhaps, with a little more patience and understanding, she might just find a way to forge an unexpected harmony between them.
