──★ Chapter tenPlummeting to their deaths was not on Adira's nor Percy's bucket list. As they hurtled through the air, the only sound was Adira's piercing screams, while Percy wondered how she could muster such energy when she was so close to dying.
The cold wind whipped around them, stinging their faces and blurring their vision. The swirling waters of the Mississippi River below seemed to rush up to meet them. Percy could feel the thundering of his heart, each beat a reminder of the seconds slipping away.
The surface of the river seemed to explode as they crashed into it with a deafening splash. The impact was like hitting a wall of concrete. The force of the collision knocked the air from Adira's lungs and sent shockwaves of pain through her body. Her vision blurred, and for a moment, the world was a chaotic whirl of bubbles and searing pain.
Adira still had her arms wrapped around Percy's neck, and he held her tightly as they sank deeper into the river. With her eyes shut, Adira began to notice the pain in her body gradually fading away, the poison was leaving her body.
Slowly, she opened her eyes to the murky waters of the Mississippi River, filled with swirling clouds of silt and debris. But to her surprise, she was completely dry. Not a single drop of water clung to her clothes or hair. And despite being underwater, she could breathe effortlessly.
She looked around herself, and noticed a bubble, filled with air, surrounding her and Percy.
Percy.
Percy Jackson.
She fully removed her head from the cradle in his neck and looked at him. Even though he looked as confused as she did, she understood that this was his doing. He had been responsible for the bubble that filled their lungs with oxygen. And he had been the one that actually saved her life.
Percy didn't care about the air bubble, not when he was scared to death of the girl he was still embracing.
Yet, before anyone could speak, they both witnessed Adira's clothes gradually soaking wet from the bottom up, while Percy remained perfectly dry. "What is going on-" Percy started but was cut off by Adira's groan.
"Ugh, curse you, Poseidon," she cursed vehemently, beginning her ascent towards the surface. As she broke through to the air above, she gasped in shock, her lungs burning from the water she had inadvertently taken in during her way upwards.
Her clothes clung damply to her skin, and her hair dripped with water. Though her body still ached, most of the pain had faded away, replaced by a lingering sense of relief.
Moments later, Percy's head broke through the surface, emerging alongside Adira. His dry state stood in stark contrast to her soaked clothes and water-dripping hair.
"Holy shit." Adira's voice pierced the air, anger and concern etched in every line of her face. "Your father can't even wait five minutes before having the joy of trying to drown me?!"
Terrified didn't even begin to describe Percy's emotions.
"Stupido figlio di puttana" she shouted. Percy thought it was directed at him.
He hesitated, grappling with his response. "Okay, but...my dad did save you," he said carefully.
Adira rolled her eyes dramatically, her earlier fury tempered but not extinguished. "And how did you even know your father would save me, or us? You took me down with you, without even knowing if we'd survive." Her voice echoed through the river, her body still throbbing with pain that made shouting unbearable.
