To understand what I'm about to tell you, first you must understand Nikolai. Sorokin Nikolai mikhailovich truly had never chosen this path- could he choose a different life to be born into, he would. But, as fate so cruelly decided, our dear kolya was cursed the very moment he had left the womb. One might even argue that he was cursed the moment he had entered the womb- I do not disagree. Nikolai was not born into a rich family- no, the opposite really. He had been born into poverty. you see, he had quite the large family, consisting of seven children- including him of course-, two of which were already adults by the time he had turned fourteen, and his parents.
Now, one could argue that dear Nikolais family was dysfunctional- maybe even bordering on neglectful or abusive, depending on who you talked to. But take that opinion with as much seriousness you would when listening to a toddlers rambling, as I'll leave the interpretation of our dear Kolyas family up to you.

I would say we have strayed from the original topic, but to understand Nikolai you must understand his upbringing- as ones upbringing plays much more than a light roll in development. While genetics have its fair play in ones personality and such, ultimately it is ones upbringing that decides ones morals, their views on life, and ultimately, their future. But now we have truly gotten off topic. Nikolai never had a good relationship with his siblings- no, not in the slightest. Though, had you asked Nikolai himself, our dear kolya would tell you he loves his family- that is, undeniably, the truth. Nikolai was loyal to no fault. That is not to say that Nikolai was overly forgiving, no- but to say that if Nikolai truly cared for someone, as he did his family, he would do nearly anything to be of use to them. we might assume that this was due to feeling useless, or maybe that our dear Nikolai felt he had to earn the love of those around him- but ultimately, only Nikolai could ever tell us his true reasoning, and we really can only guess based on his actions.
No, we cannot truly make any guesses until we delve deeper into Nikolais childhood. But first, it'd be best that we really do get a better understanding of Nikolais family- starting with his father. Sorokin Mikhail Ivanovich, no matter how much our poor kolya trusted him, was not a good man. He was arrogant, and a compulsive liar. Talking to him was almost like trying to navigate through a sea of endless lies, to find that one truth in the exact middle of it- wherever that may be. Of course, Nikolai, had known this. He was neither naive or stupid, just loyal to a fault. Mikhail was naught more than a manipulative drunkard that would turn to emotional manipulation and, dare I say, violence if it meant getting his way. Maybe we can assume this is where Nikolai developed his need to please- if only to avoid his father's outbursts. Mikhail could be considered a bad man, indeed. But can we truly claim that dear Kolyas father was a bad man without further knowledge on him? No. We can say that sorokin Mikhail Ivanovich was a terrible influence on Nikolai and his many siblings, but we cannot say that Mikhail was bad in general.
I had mentioned previously that Nikolai had many siblings. Of them, I want you, dear reader, to remember this one in particular- Sorokin Viktoriya Mikhailovna. Make sure to remember her name, she is important. Viktoriya was Nikolais oldest sibling, and, perhaps the only one who truly cared for nikolai- at least, in a way that didn't hurt the poor boy, that is. Now, of course, Viktoriya had her flaws- that is, she was naive and trusting. Without a doubt, she was more susceptible to the manipulative ways of their father. I'd like to say that this was different from Nikolais loyalty- Viktoriya hadn't a single clue that anything was wrong, she didn't know that their father was nothing more than a lying drunk. Viktoriya held their father in the highest of regards- that was dear Viktoriyas fatal flaw, yes. Now, though I would like to talk more about dear Kolyas family, give you everything I could about them, what fun is it if you already know everything before the story starts? I suppose I should get into the actual story.
