Almost tearfully, you stared at your reflection in the smudged mirror, backlit by fluorescent lights that only highlighted your body in a way that made you even more uncomfortable. You pulled at the blouse and pants you had on, cursing under your breath, trying to make them fit smoothly, but the blouse only wrinkled more, and the pants itched at your legs in a way that made you feel as if ants were biting at your thighs. It was not that the clothes were ill-fitting, no, but there was something about the colors, the way they wrinkled and tugged in the wrong places, that made you want to gag at the way you looked in the mirror. You kicked off the pants, scratching at your ankles as they slid down your legs, and tugged off the blouse, attempting to hang it back up, but only succeeding in awkwardly draping it over the plastic hanger that it had come with.

Sighing, you turned to the last item you'd brought with you to the fitting room, another blouse that was out of your comfort zone, but he'd insisted upon it, and who were you to deny him? You gnawed on your bottom lip, looking over the light blue item in your hands, and shook your head, attempting to clear away your invasive thoughts, before unclipping it from the hanger and sliding it on over your head. The material was silky, much more comfortable than the last two items, and as you used your sweaty palms to try and smooth it down over your torso, you smiled at your reflection in the mirror, hoping that a pleasant look on your face would somehow improve your low confidence.

You almost jumped out of your skin at a knock on the door, clutching your hand to your chest as Jay's voice timidly asked, "Did you try it on yet?"

"I have it on right now," you replied, looking back at your reflection quickly and swallowing hard. You didn't really want Jay to see you in clothing that you didn't feel confident in, and you eyed your old clothes, neatly folded on the bench in the corner, resisting the urge to put them back on and just go home.

"Can I see?" he asked, but you didn't respond as you glumly put your old pants back on. "Babe?"

Quietly, you said, "I don't really like the way I look in this top." You smoothed your hair down with your hand and eyed your reflection one last time before turning to the door. "But I guess..." You unlocked the door and opened it, awkwardly standing in the doorway and avoiding eye contact with your boyfriend. "Here. I'm going to change back now," you mumbled, trying to close the door on him, but he gently pushed you back into the fitting room, following behind you and shutting the door behind the both of you.

"You look good in everything," Jay said, somewhat bluntly, but with a determined look on his face, "especially in this top. I'm buying it for you." He even began rifling through his pockets, pulling out his wallet and making sure his credit card was there as you protested.

"I don't want you to waste money on something I won't even wear!" you said, tugging on his sleeve nervously, "I'd rather you just spend it on something else... something for you."

Jay raised an eyebrow, looking at you up and down as your face heated up at his analysis, feeling almost clammy in the silky material. He gently turned you around so that you could look at yourself in the mirror again, but you put your face in your hands, already knowing you'd dislike what you saw. "Babe, please look," Jay said, placing his large hands over yours, "I want you to see how amazing you look right now."

Hesitantly, you uncovered your eyes and peeked at yourself once more. You looked the same as before and you groaned, looking away again. "Jay, I already said I don't like how I look in these clothes," you said, trying to push him out of the room.

"Wait, wait," he said, brows arched in concern, "just let me talk for a moment, okay?" You pursed your lips doubtfully, but stopped trying to make him leave. "Here, look just one more time." You complied and turned around, glaring at your reflection. "Look how pretty your collarbones are, and how this top fits so snugly around your middle," Jay said softly, running his hands firstly over the aforementioned parts, before resting his hands on your hips. "Look at the way this material clings to all the right places, and how it falls so gracefully right here." He touched a gauzy, droopy part of the top with his fingertips. "You look so beautiful in this. If you really don't want to buy it, that's okay, but I want you to try and see yourself the way I see you." You bit your tongue, looking over all the areas Jay touched, his warm fingertips leaving a figurative burning flame on your upper body, and as you looked at the way your face glowed prettily in the lights, your hands mirroring his actions, you thought that you actually did look sort of nice in the color, and the fit of the blouse was better than you originally remembered.

Slowly, you turned around and looked into Jay's dark eyes, which were glowing with love. "I think... maybe I'll buy it after all," you said softly, and a gentle, happy smile spread across his face as you said so shyly.
