IN THE BEGINNING, Kai and Kitty used to spend quiet evenings together, talking about everything and nothing. Lately, their dinners have become more silent. It's not that they're angry, but the conversation has fizzled. Kai is distracted by his phone, checking messages from the other members or scrolling through his social media, while Kitty pushes her food around her plate, lost in thought.

They sit across from each other at the small table, the soft clink of silverware filling the silence. Kai glances at his phone, his expression unreadable.

"You've been on your phone a lot lately... Are you okay?"

"Yeah, just work stuff. You know how it is."

She nods, forcing a smile, but something in her chest tightens. He's always been busy, but there's a distance in his tone that wasn't there before.

"You're always busy... with the group, with fans, with everything. Sometimes I feel like I'm not part of that world anymore."

Kai looks up, guilt flashing in his eyes for a brief second, but he doesn't say anything. He's too tired, too overwhelmed by his own thoughts to address hers. Instead, he reaches across the table, squeezing her hand for just a second. It's almost like he's apologizing, but neither of them speaks the words.

Kitty has always been the one to check in on Kai. When he's on tour, she tries to text him to keep their connection alive. But lately, she finds herself more and more hesitant to reach out. When she does text, he's slow to reply, sometimes not replying at all.

Kitty stares at her phone, the message to Kai still sitting in her draft folder. She types, erases, then types again.

hey, are you free tonight? I miss you.

She taps send and waits. Then waits some more. An hour passes, and still nothing. She tries not to let it bother her, but it does. She texts again.

just checking in. hope you're okay.

This time, he responds after a long delay, the reply brief and impersonal.

Yeah, just tired. Talk later.

Kitty stares at the screen for a long time before she puts her phone down. The silence is deafening, and the tiny knot in her stomach refuses to loosen.

Their I love yous feel different now. They've been saying it for so long that it's almost become a routine. But it's also starting to feel like a formality, something they say because they know they should. Neither of them has the energy to really feel the words anymore.
