After you left, there were times when he ran away from everything.
He had been in the same cycle of hell for years. Ever since he was 21 years old, until now when he is already in his mid thirties. There is no difference, his life is just running around in circles. Mission, another outbreak, saving someone, one foot stepping inside the death's door.
You were the only mundane things that he had, and he couldn't even keep it.
He often wonders what he did in his previous life. Maybe he killed thousands of innocent people. Maybe he was some kind of tyrant — those with unforgivable sins.
That is why he can't even have something meaningful in his life. He pursued a companion, someone who stayed, and he had it. For about seven years, he had you to come back to. He had you waiting for him, ready to give the best hug he could ever have.
But he is just too stupid to let his mind wander, thinking too much whether anything that he ever had with Ada was real. Those stolen moments. The kisses, the yearning look in her eyes. How the two of them always cross paths, having that electricity only for it to vanish when she walks away.
Every goddamn time. She walks away. Always.
"Even if Ada said she wants you?"
Never you, though. When everyone seems to leave, you stick with him.
He is a real jerk for thinking of what could have been between him and her. From the start, he should have known that Ada is a mercenary, she has her own agenda. If it turns out she does love him, she would not come running to him one day.
The realisation sinked in too late. When he finally can make peace with a part of him that pine for her, you are no longer around.
"Hey, you good?"
Chris' voice snapped him out from his daydream. Before, he often got lost in the thought of his mission, the fact that he could have been dead by now. It often spiralling down between the incident in Raccoon City, to the one in Lanshiang.
Now, whenever his mind led somewhere. It is always towards you. "Yeah, 'm good."
His friend raised one of his eyebrows, "Trouble in Paradise or something?"
Leon's forehead creases at the tease. "I don't–"
"Oh, this is news to me. Gonna get married soon?"
Jill's piped in, lips curled into a smile, but a crestfallen look shadows over his face.
He looked down at his left hand, pathetically still wearing the engagement ring. No wonder they all think he is still with someone. "Yeah." Fuck, he can not even tell them the truth. There is no trouble in paradise because there is no paradise at all for him. The only angel that ever came to him was gone.
Gone from his life, at least.
"Never thought I would see the day, Leon."
"Well, what can I say, she's one of a kind." He tried to put on a smile though. Acting like you were still around, speaking as if you were waiting for him at home after each mission, his coping mechanism. "Anyway, can anyone tell me what I am dragged into?"
After the Alcatraz island outbreak, DSO and BSAA often worked together. Joining on missions is the one that keeps him going. He can not stop. No matter how many times he said he needed a vacation. He will accept any kind of job that is thrown towards him.
Because if he does, he will rot in the darkness, letting the loneliness swallow him whole.
It had been two years since then. He wondered where you were right now, not having the courage to check on your database. What if you get rid of your maiden name? Perhaps deciding to marry someone else who can give you a secure life?
