.SHANE WAS AWARE that his son was the way he was because he never bothered to be a father when he was young.
He knew Shawn had been acting out all his life because he was trying to get his attention, and he regretted not being there for him, it was eating away at his soul that his son thought of his grandfather as his actual father.
When he was told his son and his horse was missing, he still couldn't bring himself to go after him and be the father he wanted.

."So that's it huh? Your just gonna walk off? Just to hell with everybody else?" Shane asked, "I'm not saying to hell with anybody-not you Shane; Lori least of all" Rick said.
"Tell her that" Shane retorted,Rick sighed and turned towards him, "she knows" he said before continuing walking, "well look, I-I don't ok, Rick? So could you just-throw me a bone here, man? Could you just tell me why? Why would you risk your life for a douchebag like Merle Dixon?" Shane said.
"Hey, choose your words more carefully" Daryl said, "no, I did. Douchebag's what I meant" Shane said before looking back towards Rick, "Merle Dixon...the guy wouldn't give you a glass of water if you were dying of thirst" he added softly.
"What he would or wouldn't do doesn't interest me. I couldn't let a man die of thirst-me. Thirst and exposure. We left him like an animal caught in a trap. That's no way for anything to die. Let alone a human being." Rick said.
"So you and Daryl? That's your big plan?" Lori said, even though she was the one who told him to do it, Rick looked towards Glenn, "oh come on" Glenn said, "you know the way you've been there before-in and out, no problem, you said so yourself. It's not fair of me to ask, I know that, but I'd feel a lot better with you along. I know she would too" Rick said.
"That's just great. Your gonna risk three men, huh?" Shane asked, "four" T-dog said, the argument would have probably escalated if it wasn't for Carol’s silhouette broke through the dim light of the late afternoon. Anxiety radiated from her as she approached, feet hastening toward them.
“Shane!” she called, her voice trembling with urgency. The group fell silent, drawn to her frantic demeanor. “It’s Shawn—he’s missing!”
“What? What do you mean?” Daryl’s voice sliced through the air, feeling the warmth of concern coil in his gut. Shawn had been the only one to never judge him and Merle.
