SAIRA'S POV
The soft clicking of my keyboard filled the quiet of my cabin as I focused on my work, lost in my own world. But suddenly, a sharp cramp shot through my abdomen like a vicious claw, making me suck in a harsh breath. My fingers froze on the keyboard as I winced, pressing a trembling hand against my stomach. A hiss slipped past my lips as I curled forward, resting my forehead on the cool surface of my desk, gripping my stomach in an attempt to ease the pain.
This bitch, periods!
Closing my eyes tightly, I took slow, deep breaths, waiting for the pain to subside. When it dulled into a heavy ache, I forced myself to straighten up, though discomfort still lingered in my movements. I quickly changed, saved my work, grabbed my things, and left the office-I knew I wouldn't be able to function properly with cramps attacking me like this.
As I stepped into the house, the familiar warmth of home wrapped around me like a comforting embrace. The faint aroma of spices wafted from the kitchen, mingling with the chatter of voices. My eyes landed on Ammi, who was sitting with one of the maids, probably indulging in some casual gossip.
Brushing a strand of hair from my face, I made my way toward her and greeted softly, "Assalamualaikum, Ammi."
Her gaze lifted from the maid to me, her warm, motherly expression instantly turning curious. "Wa alaikum assalam, beta. You came early today?"
I nodded, my voice slightly tired. "Yes, actually... i was not feeling okay"
Concern flickered across her face as she straightened slightly. "Ya Allah! Did you took medicine and had your lunch?"
I grinned sheepishly instead of answering, and her expression immediately turned strict. In the next second, she reached out and twisted my ear lightly, making me yelp.
"Don't you even dare to skip your meals, Saira!" she scolded. "How many times have I told you?!"
"Ahh, Ammi!" I whined, clutching her hand to stop her, my eyes scrunching in protest. "I was about to eat, but I forgot!"
She pulled back her hand, her sharp eyes narrowing. "How did you forget?"
A sigh left my lips as I dropped my arms. "Because of Ayaaz bhai... He wasn't well today."
Her expression shifted instantly. Worry knitted her brows together, and she leaned forward slightly. "What happened to him? Is he fine?"
I pressed my lips together, recalling the way I had seen him today-so dull, so lifeless. My heart clenched at the thought. "I don't know, Ammi. He was... not himself. He almost fainted. I have never seen him in such a broken state before."
Ammi's mouth fell open in shock, her eyes widening in alarm. "Ya Allah! What happened to him? Did you call a doctor? How is he now?"
I nodded, trying to reassure her. "He was skipping his meals for the past few days... and another reason was Esra's death anniversary. Ammi, h-he, the strongest of us all, broke today. And we could do nothing."
A sharp gasp left her lips as she clasped a hand over her heart. "You... you knew about Esra?"
I nodded.
