The base camp was made in an abandoned town, much like the previous ones I'm assuming. Everyone had already gotten out of the vehicles. Including me and Webb. He took me to where the medical station was being set up. By this point, the pain really was starting to become unbearable, despite my previous statements about it not being that bad.

"Roe should be here somewhere," Webb said. I limply followed him into the open doorway of a building. I dodged soldiers coming in with boxes stacked in their hands. "Why were you barefoot in the first place?"

"I wasn't. At first anyway. I had some bedroom slippers on but I guess they slipped off amongst the chaos." He laughed at my statement. Soon enough we walked through another doorway where a voice was recognizable amongst the rest.

"Make sure those beds aren't too close. Still need room to work beside em'." I heard one of the most soothing cajun accents I've ever heard in my life. I have visited Louisiana before, but, the only place to hear one that soothing nowadays would be deep in the swamps.

"Doc Roe. I gotta patient for you." Webb spoke up, however, the man he referred to as Roe stayed turned facing the other direction.

"Everyone's a patient Webb. It's just a matter of when." I took in his words. He certainly had a way with them.

"This one's different. Trust me." He said that last part while looking at my attire. I furrowed my brows in response.

"What do you mean-" Roe said as he turned around. He stopped mid-sentence when he caught sight of my dirty appearance. My hair was very disheveled. My eyes were probably bloodshot and my hospital pj's have definitely seen better days. Not to mention my dangling right foot, with a piece of shrapnel sticking out of it. I took my weight off of it completely and stood on my left foot while placing a hand on Webb's shoulder to help with balance. I waved a little at my shocked appearance.

"Hey there. My name's...Effie." I said apprehensively. It made me uneasy that no one was speaking.

"Bring her over here." Roe finally spoke up, walking towards a cot in the corner of the room, grabbing a bag sitting on a side table on the way. I started to walk over before I felt an arm go around and under my left armpit. I looked up to see Webb smiling.

"I think at this point you're gonna need a little help." I chuckled, realizing he must've noticed me struggling earlier when I took my weight off of it.

I hobbled over to the bed with Webb and he set me down gently.

"Alright. I'd love to stay but I've gotta report back to Sgt. Randelaman. Take good care of her doc." He did a little salute and walked away. I could see Roe roll his eyes.

He bent down on his knee and looked up. Realizing I was staring, I looked away quickly.

"My name's Eugene Roe. Technician Fourth Grade, a non-commissioned officer with Easy Company. He began, as he worked on my foot.

"I told you my name earlier of course, but I'm sure you have questions. I can tell by your expression." He stopped what he was doing and looked up before resuming.

"This is gonna hurt. On the count of 5. 1...2...3...*Yank*!" I clenched my teeth together and gripped the bed. I leaned back some and tried to yank my foot away, but he held onto it with a tight grip.

"You said on the count of 5." I groaned as I felt him applying something to my foot, before wrapping it up.

"It hurts less when it's unexpected."

"How would you know?" I seethed, looking at him with a pout. He smiled at my expression.

"Change the wrapping after 2 days. Come back to me after 3. Keep as much weight off of it as possible. It didn't get infected, surprisingly, so you should be fine. Here." He reached his hand out, holding the piece that was in my foot. I took it gingerly.
