"Where were you?", he asked as soon as I entered home. He looked tensed but it soon turned to frustration.
Confused, I walked inside our apartment. We shifted here after our marriage two months ago, since his job is here in city, far from our home. Closing the door, I looked at him: his messed-up hairs, tie and blazar thown carelessly on sofa, he was looking at me, ready for firing questions.
But before I could ask him anything, he stood tall before me and snapped, "Where is your phone.. And where were you? Did you not remember we were supposed to attend my office party?"
My eyes widened with realization, we were supposed to attend a party, which his office arranged in celebration of achieving a big deal. The party was to be held today in the afternoon and I was supposed to meet him at the venue directly as he went early today.
"I- I thought it was tomorrow, on Sunday. And- and my friend called me today, she was near our home, so I- I went to mall with her, and- and there were- were loud noises so I did not hear- hear my phone ringing", I replied without trying to struggle more with words, but inside I was fearing of his anger, his outburst on me.
And why not! This was the first time he was angry on me, this was first in our marriage. Our relationship is new and we are trying to know each other, I did not know what to do now.
"I was waiting for you at the party, calling you every minute! Only to receive no response from you. Everyone asked me about you and I said you will arrive shortly". He snapped and rubbed his hands on his face trying to take a deep breath.
Some of his colleagues could not attend our wedding, as it was held in our home town. Ishaan had then proposed, we meet them today at the party.
"Forget that even, after sometime, I convinced myself that you would be at home, maybe sleeping and I tried every possible way to not think something happened to you!", the concern in his eyes was evident as soon as I reached towards him.
"Finally I left the party halfway and came home, to see what? The door was locked, you were not home, your phone was unreachable and to say that I am calling you from past two hours Priya ", his voice made me flinch and he left another frustrated sigh.
Sitting down on sofa with his hands covering his face, he took deep breaths, as if to stop himself from saying more. Just then he got a call from someone. As he received the call, I got to know that he will have to go somewhere.
"I am going to drop Saahil at station", he said as soon as the call ended. "I will return in an hour", he added after seeing the time in his watch.
I could only nod and stand there as he left taking bike keys. Just as I thought this was over for the day, he added, "And please don't go out now. And if you have to, ateast show some courtesy to call me once". I gulped and nodded once again, leaving a deep sigh as he went out.
I sat on the sofa and could not help but feel guilty of my behavior. His curt tone adding to my misery. My eyes became wet and I tried my best to not let the tears fall.
He did not even kiss my forehead as he always did - the warmth of his embrace, the way he would look at me with those loving eyes - his image played infront of my eyes. Our relationship was still new, and we were navigating through the ups and downs of married life. But today felt different - there was a sudden distance between us that I feared we could loose what we have built till now.
My heart ached at the thought of causing him stress and worry. The realization of how much I had hurt him today weighed heavily on me. I felt a pang of regret for not being more mindful, for forgeting about the party, for not paying attention to something that was so important to him.
