A travel bus made its way down the road, its exterior painted in yellow and blue. The words "Eelektross Express" were written on the sides in matching colours, an obvious nod to the electric-type Pokémon, Eelektross.
The bus was packed with a diverse group of people, all headed to the same destination but for different reasons. I was just one of them, an aspiring young trainer, sitting in the middle of the bus with my partner, Ralts, by my side.
Ralts was slouched on my lap, as Pokémon weren’t allowed their own seats. He let out a frustrated groan, clearly bored out of his mind from the long trip.
“Shh,” I mumbled, half-asleep. His constant groaning had just woken me up from a nap.
“But I’m bored,” Ralts whined, throwing himself back dramatically.
“Then sleep,” I replied, shutting my eyes and attempting to drift off again.
Ralts’ eyes twitched in irritation. “Entertain me, dang it!” Without warning, he slammed a small fist into my stomach, jolting me awake and nearly knocking the wind out of me.
“Ugh, alright! What do you want?” I groaned.
He shrugged. “I dunno.”
“You indecisive little runt!” I growled, lightly hitting him on the head.
Ralts rubbed his head, grimacing. “Agh! That counts as Pokémon abuse, you lazy prick!”
“Troll-sized idiot!”
“Aggressive bum!”
“Delusional dumbass!”
“Fat-headed hobo!”
We stared each other down, mock hatred in our eyes until we both burst into laughter.
“You win this time,” I admitted with a chuckle.
“Pff, I always win.” Ralts tried to boast, but I flicked his forehead, shutting him up. “I deserved that.”
I checked the time on my watch. It was currently 10:30, with an estimated arrival of 11 o’clock. “Thirty minutes left… How are we gonna kill the time?” I asked.
“Games?” Ralts suggested.
“Sure, that works.”
For the next thirty minutes, we played silly games like rock-paper-scissors and I Spy, both ending in more exchanges of insults. By the time the bus was nearing its destination, we were singing "The Wheels on the Bus" at the top of our lungs.
“The wheels on the bus go round and round…”
“Round and round…”
“Round and round…”
“The wheels on the bus go round and round…”
“All through the town…”
The bus came to a stop just as we finished the song. I looked out the window to take in the view of the new region—Kalos, the region of beauty.
“They really live up to their title,” Ralts said, sounding impressed.
“You can say that again,” I replied, equally in awe.
As the other passengers filed out, I grabbed my backpack from under my seat, and we were the last to leave. Once outside, I did a few quick stretches and readjusted my clothes—a plain grey hoodie, black sweatpants with the word "ILLUSION" down one leg, and sneakers that were more vague white than anything, thanks to how worn they were. A simple, comfortable outfit—just the way I liked it.
