Before we begin this chapter:
Thank you so much to those who have read my story. Additionally, I've gone back to my college courses which means my schedule will change a tiny bit. instead of posting a chapter whenever I complete it, I'll be posting multiple chapters and setting them to publish on specific dates. You can read new chapters every Sunday at 7:00 am Central Daylight Time. (You can see when I'll be posting in your timecode at the end of the chapter.)Does this affect recommendations? Yes. I upload as many as six chapters to Wattpad at a time. When you post a recommendation, I see it and put it in the chapter I'm working on. Not the chapters that have already been uploaded. This means that even though you recommended something, you might not see it in the story for some time. As of typing this, I've already written my chapters for September so the earliest you'll see something in my story is in October. I'm writing chapters for the upcoming month, not the month we're currently in. (If I receive a recommendation, I'll be sure to shout you out in the footnotes!)
How does this affect questions? It doesn't! Answers to questions I receive can be easily added to upcoming chapters because I put them in the footnotes. If you ask me about something most likely you'll get an answer in the next chapter. As always, I encourage recommendations for this story. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. Now, onto the chapter!
I leave Rachels early. By the time I pull into my driveway, take a shower and put my pyjamas on it's only eight-thirty. I just sort of didn't feel that great after Mason showed up. I felt claustrophobic. Every time I looked over at him while we were watching the movie he was stone-faced and mean-looking. Masons are very eerie. I throw myself into the bed, but I'm not tired. SJ was mad at me because I made her leave early. Rachel suggested that she sleep over, but she said that her dad wouldn't approve of that and he would be looking for her if he saw that I returned without her. Her dad is sort of weird, the entire neighbourhood agrees.
The landline rings and I answer it. It's SJ calling to ask if I'm okay. I tell her I am and she persists some more, insisting that if I was okay I wouldn't have made her come home early, and while that's true, I can't just say that I was upset that the rude barista ruined the movie night because he didn't find Liar, Liar to be a hilarious movie. "It's just personal issues," I told her. I don't actually know why I was upset. "Oh, did you have to use the restroom? I'm sure Rachel wouldn't have minded if you blew up her toilet." SJ jokes. I groan. "I'm changing the topic. You know that rude person at the coffee shop I told you about." I ask her. "Yeah, well that guy was Mason!"
"No way, really?"
"Yes. I can't believe it."
"Are you sure you're not just mistaken?"
"I know for a fact. I didn't recognise him at the coffee shop because he's new to town. But tonight I recognized his voice. It's very distinct." Mason had an angelic yet tired voice. It was not too deep but not too high either. It was solely his. "Well, that must have been awkward," SJ says. I can hear her readjust herself. "I guess. But he doesn't even remember me." I told her.I continue to talk to SJ. I tell her I want to get to know him. "I don't know, S, there's just something about him that's calling my name." she sighs. "Is he going to be your next project?" SJ knows that I have a habit of setting goals for myself. She used to call them projects but now I've come to embrace the name. Hence Project Rachel. "He's not a project. He's just a little sidequest. I'm just going to try and get to know him, show him the ropes around here and make sure he's fitting in. No biggie!" I reassure her. "Okay, well just be careful. According to Lori, Mason and Maddison have some really bad family issues. So now he lives with Rachel's family and he's going to our school."
"He goes to our school?"
"Yeah, he enrolled last week. I have Pre-Calc with him." I brainstorm ways to make Mason feel welcome. "How should I get to know him?" I ask. "Well, me, Mason and the girls are going to the Record Store for their big sale. Would you like to tag along?"
"Actually, that sounds fun." The Record Store has a once-a-year sale right after school starts. It's like their back-to-school sale except their records are ridiculously overpriced still and there are no new items. It's the same CD's, records, DVDs, posters and hard drives that they always have. Even though the sales are a total rip-off, it's a big deal in the town for whatever reason. I go every year. "Awesome! I'll let the girls know. Rachels going to be so thrilled. She really likes you." I gasp. "Really?"
"Oh, yeah totally. She told me in confidence that she thinks you're funny. She asked me about you yesterday after you sat at our lunch table. You should sit there again tomorrow."
