Riley was breathing hard as she ran into the nearest empty hall, the sound of her footsteps echoing off the walls. She leaned against a cold, metal locker, trying to catch her breath, her chest heaving with a mix of panic and exhaustion. Her hands trembled as she pulled her phone out of her pocket, the device feeling like a lead weight in her grasp.
Her heart sank as she saw the photo plastered across her screen. Val's arms around her, their lips locked in a kiss. The image was intimate, personal, and now it was public for everyone to see. A million thoughts raced through her mind, but one question screamed the loudest: How many people have seen it?
Riley's fingers hovered over her phone, hesitant to unlock it, but curiosity and fear pushed her forward. Her notifications were overwhelming, a barrage of messages and comments that seemed never-ending. She swiped through them, her eyes scanning the words that blurred together in her state of shock.
"Are you alright?" one message read, tinged with genuine concern.
"I didn't know you were gay," another said, the surprise evident even through text.
And then there were the hate messages, cruel and cutting. "Freak," one said. "Attention whore," another spat. Each word felt like a punch to the gut, each comment a reminder of how exposed she was. She felt her chest tightening with each word.
People from the cafeteria started to leave once the bell signaled. Everyone began flooding the halls. Riley felt herself slip to the ground with her head in her knees. She couldn't believe what was happening.
As she sat there, trying to process everything, snippets of conversation floated by, each one cutting deeper than the last.
"I can't believe Val and Dani fought," a girl said, walking past Riley. The casual tone of her voice felt like a slap in the face, as if the fight was just another piece of gossip to be dissected and forgotten.
"Did you see the look on Val's face? She looked like she was ready to kill someone," another student commented, his voice tinged with excitement.
"Yeah, but did you see Riley? She looked like she was about to have a breakdown," a girl replied, her tone filled with a mix of curiosity and schadenfreude.
"What a dyke," another voice sneered, the word dripping with malice. Riley flinched, her body recoiling as if she'd been physically struck. She buried her head deeper into her knees, wishing she could disappear.
"I heard they've been sneaking around for months," someone else whispered, their voice barely audible but still cutting through the din.
"Seriously? That's messed up," another replied, sounding genuinely shocked.
"She's such a fake," a girl said loudly, clearly intending for Riley to hear. "I can't believe I ever trusted her."
Riley felt exposed, like every part of her life was on display for everyone to judge and ridicule. The humiliation was suffocating, the betrayal by people she thought were her friends almost too much to bear.
Suddenly, she saw two familiar figures exit the cafeteria doors—Val and Dani. Both of them looked as distraught as she felt. Riley's heart ached at the sight of Val, her eyes red and puffy, her hair a mess. Val was calling out for her, her voice cracking with desperation.
"She needs me!" Val yelled, trying to shake off the hands of the teachers restraining her. "I need to know she's okay."
The principal emerged behind them, his expression stern but not unkind. "She is going to be fine, we need to take care of you two first."
"Please..." Val begged, her voice breaking.
"We have already sent our counselor to alert her teachers," the principal said, trying to reassure her.
Riley could no longer hide. Her tear-soaked eyes met Val's for a brief moment, and she saw the worry etched into Val's face. It was too much. She felt so exposed, so vulnerable. Her feet moved of their own accord as she began to push her way through the crowds of students, her only thought to escape, to get away from all the eyes on her.
Why does it feel like everyone's watching me? she thought, the panic rising in her chest. Her breaths were shallow and rapid, her vision narrowing as the walls seemed to close in around her. The whispers seemed to grow louder, turning into a cacophony that drowned out everything else.
"She's right there!"
"Look at her, she's a mess."
"Do you think she's gonna freak out?"
Riley's head spun as she stumbled through the hall, her legs feeling like they could give out at any moment. She didn't know where she was going; she just knew she had to get away. The pressure in her chest was unbearable, her heart pounding so hard she thought it might burst.
As she reached the end of the hall, she felt a gentle but firm hand on her shoulder. She spun around, panic in her eyes, to see a counselor looking at her with concern.
"Riley, come with me," the counselor said softly, trying to guide her away from the crowded hallway. "Let's get you somewhere quiet."
"I-I can't... I can't breathe," Riley stammered, her voice trembling.
"It's okay, just take deep breaths. You're safe," the counselor reassured her, leading her down a quieter corridor.
