The morning had started out surprisingly well. For the first time in weeks, Riley felt a glimmer of hope. She and Val had spent the previous evening together, wrapped up in the warmth of their newfound connection. The kiss they shared had been everything Riley never knew she needed. It felt right, like coming home after being lost for so long. As they drove home that night, laughing and sharing stories, the world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of them and the intoxicating feeling of being in love.

School that day was a blur of hushed whispers and stolen glances, but Riley didn't mind. She walked through the halls with a newfound confidence, her heart light and her mind preoccupied with thoughts of Val. They had become inseparable. Riley couldn't help but smile at the memory of Val's touch, the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed, and the feeling of their lips meeting in a perfect kiss.

Just for a second, as Riley made her way through the cafeteria looking for Val, everything seemed perfect. The world was brighter, the air was filled with possibilities, and she felt invincible. She could see Val's familiar silhouette across the room, and her heart did a little flip. But then, out of nowhere, the bubble burst as she was interrupted.

"Is it true?"

Riley looked at the Firehawks, her former teammates, confused.

"Is what true?"

"Did you and Val... kiss?" one of them asked, their tone a mix of curiosity and accusation.

"What?" Riley's heart sank, realizing how quickly the rumor had spread.

Quickly, she pulled out her phone to see a ton of notifications. Her hands trembled as she unlocked the screen, and a sinking feeling settled in her stomach. Among the flood of messages, one post stood out: "Beware of the Michigan girlfriend stealer." It was from Alex's social media, and Riley felt the blood drain from her face as she saw the picture of their kiss.

She hadn't even told her parents yet, she thought, the enormity of the situation crashing down on her. He caught a picture of the kiss? But how? Riley's mind reeled, her thoughts spinning out of control. The betrayal was like a knife to her heart, twisting with every second she stared at the post.

In her panic, Riley stumbled to her feet, needing to move, to escape the suffocating pressure. She needed to find Val, to be with her and figure out what to do.

Dani then stepped forward, blocking Riley's path with an expression that was a volatile mix of hurt and anger. "You should've told me that you were in love with Val instead of leading me on like that."

Riley felt a pang of guilt and panic, her heart pounding in her chest. "Dani, I... it's not like that."

"Then what is it like, Riley?" Dani snapped, her voice rising with each word. "You've been playing with my feelings while all along you were in love with her the whole time?"

Riley's mind raced, struggling to find the right words to explain, to make Dani understand. "I never meant to hurt you, Dani. I just... I didn't know how to deal with this."

"Didn't know how to deal with this?" Dani's eyes flashed with anger. "So you thought it was okay to string me along while you figured out your feelings?"

"No–" Riley tried to explain, her voice trembling. "I was confused, and I didn't want to lose you..."

"Me?" Dani's voice dripped with bitterness. "You think we can still be friends after this? After you've been lying to me this whole time?"

Riley felt tears welling up in her eyes, the weight of the situation crashing down on her. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldn't come. The guilt, the shame, the fear—it was all too much.

"I don't know... I just..." Riley stammered, tears forming in her eyes.

"You're a jerk!" Dani shouted, her face contorted with anger. Without warning, she slapped Riley across the face.

The Firehawks stood in stunned silence, unable to believe what they were witnessing. The entire cafeteria stopped moving and stared starting to form a circle.

Out of nowhere, Val intervened, shoving Dani away from Riley. "What the hell, Dani?"

"You can keep your little 'call girl'," Dani spat, her voice dripping with venom.

"Excuse me?" Val asked, her voice a mix of confusion and hurt. She couldn't understand why Dani was so angry.

Out of nowhere, another Firehawk stepped forward, holding up their phone. "Look at this," they said, their tone almost sorrowful. On the screen was a picture of Riley and Val kissing, the image capturing the intimacy and vulnerability of the moment.

"Alex—" Val said shocked. "Did you have a part in this?!," she continued pulling her hand back, ready to strike Dani.

"Val—" Riley pleaded, tears streaming down her face as she tried to pull Val away, "Stop it, it's fine."

"It's not fine!" She said pushing Riley off her, "How could you hurt her-"

"What?" Dani shot back, her voice full of spite. "At least I'm not walking around as a skank."

The tension exploded. Val's fist flew, connecting with Dani's jaw. Dani retaliated with a scream of rage, swinging back wildly. The cafeteria erupted into chaos, students shouting and trying to either intervene or back away.

Phones began to fly up, capturing the moment in a flurry of flashes and recording lights. Riley felt like she was moving in slow motion, the chaotic scene around her a surreal nightmare. She might as well have been paralyzed by fear. Terrified of what this meant for her future, she stared in horror at the person she loved, acting so violently.

Is this what being in love was like, she wondered? Is this the consequence of being in love?

Teachers rushed in, their shouts barely audible over the din. They pulled Val and Dani apart, struggling to control the situation. Val's eyes were wild, her chest heaving with exertion, while Dani's face was a mask of rage and hurt.

Riley, overwhelmed with emotions, felt the ground shift beneath her. The fight, the humiliation, the betrayal—it was all too much. Her breath came in short, ragged gasps as panic seized her. She felt like she couldn't breathe, the walls of the hallway closing in on her.

Without a word, she turned and fled, pushing through the crowd and bursting out of the doors into the open air.

Val turned in an instant, her instincts taking over despite the blood trickling from her nose and the chaos surrounding her. She frantically searched for Riley, her heart pounding with fear and urgency.

"Riley?" Val screamed, her voice breaking as she was held back by teachers. She turned back to the Firehawks, her eyes blazing with anger and desperation.

"Riley!" she yelled again, struggling against the teachers' grip, trying to pull away.

Dani's face twisted with a mix of guilt and defiance. Her anger slowly gave way to a dawning realization as she, too, was restrained by teachers. She stood there, frozen, her eyes darting around the scene, unsure of what to do next.
