In the morning I quickly got ready and headed out the door as soon as possible. I admit, I quickened my walking pace ever so slightly. My excuse? I just wanted to spend some time in the cafe to sharpen up my mind before my evaluation.
Walking in through the door, the ding of the bell bounced off the tiled flooring. I was hit with the smell of fresh baked goods. It smelled amazing, sometimes I wish I chose another career path. I had to know what the source of this smell was. Seems like my prayers were answered because from the back came Adeline's mother with a tray of croissants.
"Didn't think anyone was going to come in so soon! I'll be right with you, just let me put these in the display case," She exclaimed.
"No problem, I'll be here."
I glanced, down at the ground, feeling something nudge against my leg. It was Mish Mish, Adeline's cat. I smiled at the gesture and bent down to give her chin rubs.
"Looks like she likes you," Adeline's mother pointed out, now behind the cash register. Standing back up straight, she took my order and we conversed briefly as I was the only person in the cafe that early.
"Thank you Ms. Dubois," I said, now parting ways with her since people began spilling in. The light atmosphere made it perfect for studying. Not too loud, not too quiet.
I didn't get too far into my notes, as a voice stood out to me. Looking up, I saw Adeline behind the counter talking with a slightly older woman holding up a plate. It looked like they were having a disagreement over something.
"This isn't what I ordered! I want a refund!" The woman huffed, stomping a foot.
Adeline replied in an even tone, clearly holding back. "I apologize for the mistake and I'd give you a refund under different circumstances, however you did eat more than half of your muffin."
"So?"
"What do you mean "so?" You nearly ate the whole thing, I can't exactly give you your money back."
My leg bounced up and down as the situation unfolded. I then glanced around to see if any of the other on lookers were going to intervene.
The altercation soon escalated, the woman finally exploded showing her true colors, "What part of refund do you not understand?! Are you fucking stupid?"
Immediately shooting up from my seat, nearly knocking down my chair I stormed over to the counter. I wasn't going to allow someone be insulted right in front of my face. I wasn't going to allow her to be insulted. What the hell was I thinking, sure I did admit to liking her, but c'mon. This predicament I'm in is so cheesy, right now I'm thinking about how this is going to sound when relayed back to Archer. However, my thoughts quickly change when I hear Adeline once again.
"I should be asking you that, unless you throw up your portion of the muffin right now I can't give you a refund. Now please leave, you're holding up the line."
"You've just lost a valuable customer, I will never be coming back," The woman screeches.
"Good!" Adeline shouted before the lady slammed the door.
Suddenly, Adeline's attention was on me. "What're you doing?"
That's when I realized I was standing like an idiot in front of not only her, but also in front of a whole crowd of people.
I rubbed the pads of my index finger and my thumb together. "I...uh, I wanted to see you."
Archer is going to eat me alive.
"You saw me, I have to get back to work."
"Yes. Right." I paused for a moment, "Can I see you after your shift?"
By this point, she was already taking the next person's order, but she nodded.
