Marcus stepped back slightly, giving the paramedics room to do their work, but he couldn't bring himself to look away. He wanted to reassure her, to tell her that everything would be alright, but he didn't want to interfere with the medical care she needed.
The paramedics assessed her injuries, quickly stabilizing her and preparing her for transport to the nearest hospital. As they worked, Marcus felt a sense of helplessness, knowing that there was very little he could do at that moment, other than watch and pray that she would be okay.
An Agent spoke "Boss, we found something,".
Marcus turned to the Agent who had addressed him, his expression tense and concerned. "What did you find?" he asked, his voice firm and urgent.
Marcus's heart sank at the sight of the other body, and a mixture of anger and sadness washed over him. It was difficult enough to comprehend what had happened to Elaine, but seeing the lifeless form of another young person made the situation all the more horrifying. He clenched his fists, trying to maintain his professional composure as he took in the sight before him.
Turning back towards the ambulance, he could see the paramedics carefully loading Elaine into the vehicle. He couldn't let his emotions get the better of him now. He needed to stay focused and help find who was responsible for all this.
He turned back to the Agent who had found the body and gave them a nod. "Alright, secure the scene and start a thorough search of the area. I'll head to the hospital to check on Elaine."
The Agent nodded in understanding, and Marcus quickly headed towards his car, his mind racing with thoughts and unanswered questions. The fact that two young lives were affected by this senseless act of violence made him all the more determined to get to the bottom of it and bring justice to those responsible.
He sped towards the hospital, thoughts of Elaine and the other teenager filling his mind. He hoped that she would be okay and that her injuries weren't severe. He also couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt that he couldn't have done more to prevent all this from happening.
As he arrived at the hospital, he hurried towards the entrance, his heart racing. He approached the front desk and asked for information on Elaine's condition. Time seemed to stand still for him as he waited for the receptionist to find her information in the system.
Finally, the receptionist looked up from her computer screen, a serious expression on her face. "She's being treated in the ER. The doctor will be out shortly to give you an update on her condition."
Marcus nodded his thanks and began pacing anxiously. The waiting was excruciating, but he couldn't do anything except wait for the doctor's update. His mind went back to the scene in the backyard, the sound of Elaine's cries, the sight of her desperate attempts to escape.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, trying to steady his thoughts. It seemed like an eternity in that waiting room, but the doctor finally arrived, a grim expression on his face. Marcus eagerly stepped forward, ready to hear the news about Elaine's condition.
The doctor spoke in a serious voice, his eyes meeting Marcus's. "She's in stable condition, but she has suffered significant trauma. We're still running tests to assess the extent of her injuries, but she'll need time to recover. We'll keep her overnight for observation, and you can see her briefly, but she's resting now,".
Marcus let out a sigh of relief, knowing that Elaine was going to be okay. He nodded in understanding about her condition and the need for observation. The news of her stable condition lifted a weight off his chest, and he expressed his gratitude to the doctor for the update.
Once the doctor left, Marcus was directed to a room where Elaine was resting. He stepped inside quietly, his gaze falling on her small form in the hospital bed. She appeared so small and vulnerable amid the machines and tubes. He approached her slowly, not wanting to disturb her rest.
He took a seat on a chair beside the bed, his heart aching as he looked at her scratched-up face and the bandages around her head. The sight of her like that made him feel a mix of anger and helplessness. He wished he could take away all her pain and suffering. But all he could do now was watch over her while she recovered.
He reached out a tentative hand and carefully placed it on hers. He didn't want to wake her, but he needed that small connection. The touch was gentle, almost affectionate, as he gently rubbed his thumb over her knuckles. His eyes remained fixed on her face, watching the steady rise and fall of her chest as she breathed.
He wanted to say something, to reassure her that everything would be okay, but he didn't want to disturb her slumber. So he sat there silently, holding her hand and staring at her face. The room was quiet except for the soft beeping of the machines, lulling him into a state of contemplative silence.
He let his mind wander back to the events that led to this moment. He thought about the strange phone call, the elderly lady's backyard, and the shock and horror he felt when they dug up Elaine's trembling form. There was so much that still didn't make sense, and he knew that there was much work to be done to find the truth behind it all.
But for now, his focus was just on her. He studied her features, the curve of her jaw, the slight dip at the bridge of her nose. He took in all the details of her face as if trying to memorize it, to capture this moment of vulnerability and fragility. He made a silent promise to himself that he would not let her face this alone.
He continued to hold her hand, silently wishing that he could absorb her pain and trauma. He knew that the road to recovery would be hard for her, both physically and emotionally. But he also knew that she was strong. She had fought through the initial shock and terror, and she had survived. She just needed time and support to heal.
