chapter one. walls up

beads of sweat dripped along every inch of his tan skin, his bottom lip became trapped between teeth as a muffled grunt fell from his lips. adley rotated the hefty barbell between his two palms, biceps flexing at each push.

       "almost done rutschman!"

the rap playlist that adley had shuffled boomed from wall to wall, injecting in his veins as his adrenaline boosted. though his trainers rough words may have encouraged him more. along with the occasional claps that purposely rang through his ears.

stories floated around about the kind nature of the boy and how likeable he genuinely was but his workout routine contrasted the perspective put in place about him. it was rough and seemingly never-ending. he enjoyed a challenge, not liking things to come easy for him which they weren't. and he gradually came to realization of it after stepping into the meeting every minor league player so desperately waits for - getting the approval to pack their belongings and head to the major leagues.

a heavy huff fell from his lips, hair falling in front of his concentrated, narrowed eyes. the words of stephen dempsey rung throughout his ears, until one of his distractions got cut off, breaking his focus from the weight in front of him.

"where the fuck is my music?" he stood up, wiping away the drops sweat running down his forehead. his eyes shot with an annoyed expression to his trainer, but when he realized his focus wasn't on adley and rather a girl next to the speaker, he gravitated his annoyance.

"sorry but i don't know if my seven year old private lesson wants to listen to lil durk at seven in the morning," the girls voice snapped, her face matched her dominating tone.

adley eyed the girl out of overall curiosity, not necessarily because she tampered with his shuffle but more that he was positive he had seen her somewhere.

his emerald orbs moved to the crimson tide softball shirt she was clad in before it clicked in his mind. from his daily mornings of watching sports center, he recognized her face from the gruesome video on constant replay. he remembered the first time he had watched the replay of her injury, it was something he never wanted to witness again.

she gave once last glance to both of the men before turning on her heel, her braided ponytail flipping with her movement. once she had turned around, only did adley just notice the metal brace around her knee, confirming his theory.

"sorry taylor!" stephen called out to the girl, earning a nonchalant thumbs up in response.

the two boys continued to watch as she greeted a younger girl that had walked through the glass doors with simply a glove. a bright grin was spread on her face, in contrast to the stone cold one she just had wore when talking to them.
