PROLOGUE

Lightning flashed, casting a glow on the smooth granite boulders, turning them an odd silver-gold. The only thing that could be heard above the downpour and thunder was the surprisingly calm ripple of water from the river, and the whisper of trees in the forest.

There was a stirring in the shadow, and dark shapes were illuminated by the lightning, climbing stealthily over the rocks. Unsheathed claws glinted in the dim moonlight. Then, with a rumble of thunder, as if it were a signal, the creatures leaped at each other, making the rocks alive with wrestling and screeching cats.

In the center of the frenzy of fur and claws, a massive golden tabby tom, soaked by the downpour of rain, pinned down a bracken colored tom and drew his head up triumphantly.

"Oakheart!" he growled, baring his sharp teeth. "How dare you hunt in our territory! The sunningrocks belong to us, they belong to ThunderClan!"

Oakheart smirked up at the tom.

"After tonight, Lionheart, this will just be another RiverClan hunting ground" the bracken-colored tom sneered.

A warning yowl came from the shore, shrill and anxious

"Look out! More RiverClan warriors are coming!"

Lionheart turned to see sleek bodies sliding out of the water below. The drenched RiverClan warriors, whether it be from the river or the rain, bounded silently up the shore and hurled themselves into battle.

The golden tabby glared down at Oakheart.

"You May swim like otters, but you and your warriors do not belong in this forest!" he drew his lips back and once again showed his teeth.

Oakheart sneered up at him again.
