The early morning sun cast a golden hue over the landscape as we continued our journey. The air was crisp, with a hint of dew still lingering on the grass, and the forest around us seemed to wake up with us. Birds chirped in the treetops, their songs a stark contrast to the tense silence that had accompanied us for most of the night.

Willow walked beside me, her hand resting lightly in mine as if seeking reassurance. Over the past few days, we had grown closer—physically, emotionally, in ways I hadn't thought possible. There was a connection between us, something that felt old and familiar, like a thread that had always existed but had only recently been pulled taut.

I could sense her anxiety as we neared the camp, the place we had been searching for since the beginning. We both knew that this camp, hidden deep within the forest, held answers. It was a safe haven for people like us, but also a place of secrets. Willow had been quieter than usual during this final stretch, lost in thoughts I could only guess at. But she was here, leaning on me more than she had before, and that was enough.

Ahead of us, Aria was guiding the group, her gaze focused, yet there was a tension in her shoulders. She hadn't slept much, worrying about her brother, still in a coma in the van. Ethan and Adrian covered the vehicle, their eyes scanning the surroundings as we moved cautiously through the woods. Luke brought up the rear, his usual lighthearted demeanor subdued as he kept a watchful eye on our backs.

The path had grown narrower, the trees denser. It was almost as if the forest was closing in around us, making sure we were worthy of reaching whatever lay ahead. The deeper we went, the more I felt an undercurrent of power in the air—something more than just the natural energy of the forest. Willow must have felt it too, because she squeezed my hand, her eyes meeting mine with a mix of anticipation and fear.

"I don't know what we'll find there," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm glad you're with me."

I squeezed her hand in return, feeling the warmth of her skin grounding me. "We'll face it together, whatever it is. You're not alone, Willow. You never have been."

She smiled, but there was something behind it. Something unresolved, like a shadow lurking in the corners of her mind. I didn't press her, knowing she would tell me when she was ready. We had our own unspoken language now, one that didn't always need words.

For days, we had been walking through this dense forest, guided only by the faintest of leads. We only had a rough map and the hidden code Luke and Willow had find : "Phoenix." It wasn't much, but it was all we had.

The phoenix was the symbol of the Differs, those with powers like ours who had found refuge from the world that feared and hunted them.

Willow's grip on my hand tightened slightly as we navigated a narrow, winding path. Aria, who had been leading the group, paused and turned back to us, her expression a mix of determination and caution. "We must be getting close. Everyone stay sharp. We don't know what to expect. That's weird, it's almost too calm. I can't hear a thing."

Ethan and Adrian exchanged a glance. Ember, who had been unusually quiet, shifted her grip on her makeshift weapon and moved to stand beside Willow and me.

As we pressed on, we began to notice more signs—symbols carved into tree trunks, stones arranged in deliberate patterns, all variations of the phoenix. Each one sent a ripple of anticipation through the group, but also an undercurrent of unease. They were hidden, but not enough for us to not see them. Whoever had left these markers had done so for a reason, and we couldn't be sure if it was to guide us or to test us.
