Lost and Found
Chapter 1
You wake up in a haze. Your body aches with pain as you sit up, but immediately fall back down.
What happened? You thought as you lift your head up off the rocky ground. Your vision is blurry. You finally get a sense of your surroundings, and a worn-down ramshackle comes into view. You shake your head. The last thing you saw before you passed out was a forest rich with wildlife and green, and now, suddenly, you're here. Your paws shuffle along the ground, looking for an anchor to grab onto. Your claws grasp onto a few pebbles as you slowly pull yourself up. You shake off the rubble latched onto your thin fur, causing more pain and fear to spread through your body.
''Where am I?'' You croak out, hoping for an answer from anything. Your eyes widen as you hear the flapping of wings above you. You whip around to reveal a large crow standing behind you, also in shock. They have long talons, and their wings blend in perfectly with their black feathers, making it seem they don't have wings at all. Confusion and slight anger shine in their eyes.
'What are you doing here?'' The bird asks, taking a step closer to you.
What were you doing here? You search your memory for any answers, but it all trails back to the woodland you saw before you landed here.
''I don't even know. Where am I?'' You ask, also taking a step towards the crow.
Certainly, they would know, they seem as if they've lived here for years. They draw a wing forwards, towards you.
''What did you see before you saw me?'' It suddenly asks.
''The cabin, but before that a timberland.'' You respond, a worried look painting your face.
It taps its talon to the ground, lost in thought. After a couple seconds, their gaze snaps back to you as their expression changes to realization.
''You're from the past!'' They exclaim, shooting up into the air, startling you.
''What, what do you mean?'' You say as you raise your paw into the air, catching the bird's wing, and dragging it back down.
''Assuming that I am correct, you are now 10,000 years into the future.'' They say matter-of-factly, as if they thought that you already knew.
''And you know this, because?'' You say as you release the bird from your grasp.
''That is not for you to know,'' they say. You draw your paw back up, threatening to swipe him. ''Alright, alright. I'm over 10,000 years old, and I got cursed with immortality. After your common era, the continent was abandoned. But I also can't leave, thanks to the curse.
''So now, my task is to pick certain individuals whom I think are worthy of bringing this land back to prosperity. I don't have the power fully under control, but I am still practicing with random creatures.'' They said proudly.
''So basically, what you are saying is that I'm your test subject?'' You ask, crouching down to make eye contact with the bird. It winces and steps back as its purple eyes fill with offense.
"Sort of? Anyway," they say, nudging your snout away with their wing. ''I'm Devlin. Would you like help to learn how to survive here?'' Devlin offers as they lift into the air again, hovering over you.
You inaudibly sigh and roll your eyes. This bird is going to be a thorn in your side.
"I'm Vile.''
"Cool name''
''And no, I would not like your help.'' You scoff, shocking Devlin.
You shake your head again, which didn't help your headache. This place should have shelter and a food source. If not, you may as well die. You walk away from the bird, leaving them for themselves.
