-Mason's POV-
Freshman Year
The first time I saw Noah Conway was freshmen year soccer tryouts. His hair was messy from the wind and his clothes wrinkled with every gust. He was new, just like all of us. The seniors stared us down, their hard gaze focusing on every one of us. We felt like goldfish being added to a tank of piranhas. The coach knew we would be great food for the older players. They were ready to rip us apart with their fast swimming and their unhinged mouths.
As tryouts began Noah and I were often put against each other. If I was goalie for my team, he'd be put on goalie for his, if I was put on midfield so was he. I could tell he was aware of this as well. He would glance over at me then at coach and back to me. We had been positioned like that for all of tryouts. From day one, we were always on opposite teams, glancing at each other from across the field.
He was a good player from what I had seen. I'd get some goals and he'd turn it around and get more for his team. Our teams had tied nearly every day of tryouts. It was beginning to frustrate the seniors so the last day of scrimmaging coach put Noah and I on the same side, him on defense and me on offense. We scored a total of 10 points that day, the other team only got one when Noah and I had to take a break.
When the teams were posted Noah and I lagged behind the large group of kids that had swarmed around the team list. Soccer was a big deal at our school. After ten minuets the crowd disappeared, some kids were crying and some were yelling in excitement. I had uncrossed my arms as we walked side by side to the list. With barely a glance at the list we saw that we had both made the JV team. It made sense, we were both really good and only freshman at the time.
I don't know who turned their head first but we both ended up looking at each other from where we stood before the list. I smiled and curled my hand into a fist, holding it out to him. He glanced at it for a second before his face was sporting a similar smile and he bumped my fist with his own. We both turned and walked opposite directions, I didn't even have to turn back and look at him to know that smile was still spread across his face.
Our practices were a lot more intense than I had thought they would be. Coach pushed us, and he pushed us hard. He continued to move Noah and I around, we'd be on the same team one day and put head to head the next. I think coach was testing us and our chemistry for the sake of the team. The only thing that was consistent was our drills, Noah and I had been paired together every single time.
Noah was a quiet boy. We had no classes together but we saw each other everyday at lunch and soccer practice. Looking back on it I don't think Noah had directly talked to me that whole year. Sure we'd been apart of conversations together but we hadn't actually talked to each other one on one.
That year I had mostly gotten glances from the boy. He usually had his soft features in a neutral position, not mad or angry but almost never a smile. He resembled a squirrel who was always focused on finding nuts, nothing else. As the school year went on we fell into the same group of friends, our teammates. We were all pretty close but every time the team had gone out after matches Noah had never been there. Sure he was friendly with everyone but only during school hours.
Our group were by no means popular that year, the JV team didn't matter as much as the regular team. They were the popular players, all of them being juniors and seniors. I remember looking up to them a lot. I told my myself over and over that one day I was going to be in that group. I was going to sit at that specific popular table and be praised every day for my soccer playing.
