This is the first chapter to a book that doesn't have a name yet. It follows Luca and Theo and their journey to love and discovery. After a traumatic event, Luca is forced to move and attend a new high school. He's put into a peer counseling class and there he meets Theo. They get off to a rocky start but hate quickly turns to friendship and friendship slowly turns to love. How will Luca handle new love, a new school, sudden panic attacks, and unresolved trauma. This first chapter is only a little taste to a long and heartwarming journey. Let me know if I should publish their full story :)
-Luca's POV-
tick... tiCK... TICK...
"Luca?" I sit up straighter at the sound of my name.
"I found it" The lady tells me, beckoning me over to her desk.
I slowly raise from my seat, grabbing my backpack and making my way to her. I look down at the name tag on her desk. Janet. Janet holds out a paper and I grab it slowly, flipping it around to get a proper look. It was a list with all my classes as well as the times, teachers name, and room number.
"You should head to your first period the bell is about to ring" She's looking at the clock as she speaks.
I give her a wary smile and nod my head, choosing not to say anything. She smiles widely anyway and moves on when another student walks in. I step away and exit the room, looking down at the paper again to actually read the schedule.
"Writing... Math... Lunch... Peer Counseling..." I mumble to myself, taking slow steps down the busy hall so I don't run into anybody.
"Wait what the hell is peer counseling??" I say a little louder in pure confusion. This causes a few heads to turn but I ignore them and keep my head down.
"Are you new?" A girl says from behind me.
I turn, instantly making eye contact with the owner of the voice. I take in her appearance. She had deep green eyes that could pass for blue in the right lighting. Her lighter brown hair fell in loose waves over her shoulders, coming down to the top of her pants. She was gorgeous and she was talking to me. Wait what did she say again?
"Uhhhh yeah." I respond, forcing a half smile to try and seem friendly even thought she already intimidates me.
"That's why you have peer counseling. What days?" She lifts herself on her tippy toes and peers down at the paper in my hands. I look down at it as well, scanning the paper with my eyes to find the days I had that class.
"Mondays and... Fridays." I read out to her, turning the paper around so she could get a good look at it herself.
"Ahhh okay so most days you go to a study hall for 8th period but on Monday and Fridays you'll go to Mrs. Kelly's office for that hour." She says, looking back up at me after her explanation.
"That still doesn't answer my question." I say, watching her pretty features shine with laughter.
After a minute she calms down. She motions for me to follow her while she walks backwards down the hallway. I follow slowly, keeping my eyes on her but still paying attention to our surroundings.
The other students seem to just move out of her way as she walks. Like she is some kind of god and getting near her will instantly kill you. I also notice all the looks she is getting. Or rather, all the looks WE are getting.
I keep my head down, trying to focus on the girl I was walking with rather than the other dozen eyes on me. It makes it hard to concentrate on what she's trying to tell me.
"You'll be in an office with Mrs. Kelly and one other student. It's a time you can use to ask questions or if you need help with anything. Think of it as an instant friend you get to talk to twice a week." She takes in the look on my face. I did not like this idea.
"Don't worry.... What's your name again?" She asks as she stops walking backward and takes her place beside me instead. We continue walking but side by side this time.
"Luca" I reply, trying to keep my eyes on the ground.
"Luca. I like it. I'm Maddie. It's nice to mee-" The bell rings, cutting her off. She just smiles at me. "I'll catch you later okay? I'll find you before lunch" I don't have time to reply before she runs down the hallway, waving at me as she goes. I watch her hair flow behind her until she turns the corner and disappears from my sight.
I make it through my morning classes in one piece, though I was at least ten minutes late to all of them. The teachers were nice but I have yet to talk to another student besides Maddie.
Eventually lunch rolls around and I still can't find her. I decide it would be a good time to find my locker since I haven't had time all morning to look for it and I wasn't that hungry anyways. I walk through the now empty halls scanning every locker to look for mine.
100... 101... 102... ahh yes 103.
I found it. I try the code they gave me but it doesn't seem to work. I try it again, thinking I may have messed it up but again, it doesn't budge. I curse under my breath and huff in frustration.
"Sometimes you just got to punch it" Maddie appears beside me, banging her fist on the locker and making me flinch with the loud noise. The locker pops open instantly.
"Thanks Maddie" I say, giving her a small smile to show my gratitude. I slide off my backpack and store the textbooks I used this morning on the bottom shelf. I shut it and turn to the beautiful girl waiting for me.
"I thought you forgot about me" I say to her as I slide my backpack back on and close the locker.
"I was waiting for you in the lunchroom but you never showed. Figured you got lost or something" She responds, pulling out an apple and offering it to me. I shake my head no and she shrugs, taking a bite out of it.
"I don't really eat lunch" I say to her and she nods in understanding.
"Why don't we walk around instead so you can get to know the place. I'll give you an official Westwood High tour. You'll never be late to a class again" I nod and we start walking down the hall.
For the next half hour Maddie and I walk around the building. She shows me where all my classes are, even where Mrs. Kelly's office is for my class later. I didn't have much to say so I just observed.
I swear I've already memorized her talking habits. She laughs a lot which is a trait that I already know suits her really well. She was refreshing. A light in the darkness that is my life right now.
I used to laugh a lot too. Back at my old school I was a lot like Maddie. I even looked like her. The light hair, light eyes, light smile. I dyed my hair when we moved. I also wear contacts now. They dull my eyes. My real smile is gone as well. There's nothing to smile about anymore.
Maybe someday I will have something to smile about again.
