Three weeks. It had been three weeks since Kyo began working at Kazuma's dojo. Preparing classes, teaching new moves, and repairing the walls and doors broken by rage-filled students.
Tohru worked as well, of course, but not nearly as much as Kyo. The ladies at her company would often push her to take more days off as a reward for her hard work. But because Kyo was working, Tohru often found herself with nothing to do on her days off.
But once evening approached, Tohru never found herself bored. She'd begin to cook dinner, knowing Kyo would be home soon, wrapping his arms around her from behind and asking the same old question.
"What's for dinner?"
"Kyo! I didn't hear you come in," Tohru exclaimed, startled.
Kyo chuckled. "My bad. I didn't mean to scare you," he said with a smile, before leaning down to kiss Tohru on her head.
"You're fine! Tonight's dinner is just riceballs—I hope that's okay?"
"Of course that's okay," Kyo said, walking towards the fridge. "Why, though? You've been pretty extravagant with your meals lately. Seems out of character."
Tohru scurried over to him before he could open the fridge, looking up into his eyes cheerfully. "I was just really excited for you to come home! So I got a little distracted and forgot to go shopping," she said in a bit of an embarrassed tone.
Kyo looked at her with a great amount of love and admiration, before lifting her chin up with his hand to kiss her. "I was excited to see you too."
Once their lips were pried apart, Tohru looked blankly at Kyo, her cheeks red as a tomato.
"I—um.. I'm glad! Very glad. Why don't you go sit in the living room? I'll bring you your riceballs when they're done!" Tohru rambled. They had been dating for a while at this point, and they'd kissed hundreds of times. But Tohru still found herself blushing after every one.
Kyo smiled and let out a small laugh. "Okay, dummy." He gave her a light knock on the head with his fist before heading to the living room.
Tohru quickly finished up the riceballs and brought Kyo his plate. She set her plate down next to his, sitting down beside him shortly after.
"So, what did you do with your day off?" Kyo asked before shoving his mouth full of the riceball.
"Oh, just some cooking and chores! The usual," Tohru said with a bright smile. She knew that if she had any other expression on her face, Kyo would worry.
"Seems like that's all you do. You cook, you clean, you shop. Even when you're not at work, you're still working. Are you sure you're okay with me being gone so much?" Kyo asked, taking another large bite out of his riceball.
"Don't worry about me! I like doing all that stuff, anyway." Tohru grinned.
The truth was, she did enjoy doing those things, but she wanted Kyo to be there with her when she did them. She wanted him to help her cook. She wanted him to be there to pick out groceries. She wanted him to stand next to her at the table and fold the laundry. Even for the most mundane tasks, she wanted him to be there. But she knew it was selfish to want that, to keep him from his work; so she didn't let that on.
"I hope you're telling the truth, Tohru."
Kyo looked at her with worried eyes and a furrowed brow. She didn't like when he looked at her like that. She wanted him to be at ease. And perhaps the only way for him to be at ease was to tell the truth.
"Well... It's a little lonely sometimes—but it's okay! I don't mind, really!"
Even when trying to tell the truth, she still put on a facade.
Kyo set down his riceball and gave Tohru a serious look. "Tohru, if you want me home more, say it. Say it and I'll stay home." She could tell he was serious.
"Maybe... Maybe just a little more. But—not if you don't want to, okay?" Tohru insisted.
"I will always want to stay home with you."
Kyo brought Tohru's hand up to his lips, kissing it gently before intertwining his fingers with hers. He then leaned over to her ear.
"We're both taking the day off tomorrow, okay?" he whispered.
"Okay," Tohru said, a wide, genuine smile spreading across her face.
She was home.
