Ava's Descent
As I plummeted down the hill, sharp rocks and branches tore into my flesh and bruised my skin. The world spun around me, and my voice failed as tears streamed down my cheeks. Accepting my fate, I wondered what my life could have been as I hit the forest floor, my vision fading.
Several hours later, I woke up, disoriented and scared. I called out for my brother, then took in my surroundings. I was lying in a small cabin, my foot and cuts bandaged. A painful throb in my head greeted me as I lifted myself off the unfamiliar bed.
The Strange Lady
Confused and frightened, I scanned the room when I heard distant footsteps. Scrambling to my feet, I hid under the bed, careful not to make a noise. As my vision cleared, I saw the legs and shoes of a woman before she pulled me out.
"Oh, you poor thing, you must be so scared," she said softly. "You mustn't get up. Here, let me lay you down to rest." She guided me back onto the bed. She looked as old as my mother, with pale skin, dark hair, and emerald green eyes.
"W-who are you?" I managed to stutter, terrified by her old-fashioned clothes.
"My name is Ellen, but you can call me Elle. If you don't mind me asking, what is your name, dear?" she asked sweetly.
"I-I'm Ava P-Parker," I whispered.
"Well, Ava, you should not be in these woods. Do you know what creatures lurk here?" she said, her tone grave.
Ellen's Warning
A few hours later, after Ellen had fed me and given me some clothes she had sewn, she looked at me with a serious expression.
"this forest is cursed, Those who enter here shall never leave unless the curse is broken. If you ever want to go home again, you must find a way to break it," she said in a low, wary tone. "Stay on the gravel path and do. not. under any circumstance leave the paths"
