Anne stood patiently in the cafeteria line-up for lunch. Today's lunch was chicken nuggets, corn and mashed potatoes, one of Dolores's more tolerable lunches.
"Hey, are you busy after school? We should hang out," Zoe, Anne's friend, spoke up behind her.
"I don't think so. My parents are out of town so it's just me and my brother. Knowing him, he's probably going to invite over the whole school and get wasted." Anne answered sarcastically, turning to face her friend.
The line moved up ahead, and Anne was next to get her food. The person in front turned around when the chicken was placed on his tray.
"Dolores's chicken nuggets always look like random animals. Watch," he said, looking at Anne and then at her tray. She slapped the mashed potatoes, corn and then finally the chicken onto the tray.
"Holy shit, you got a unicorn," he said, pointing toward the one nugget.Anne snickered uncontrollably. It didn't look like a unicorn to her, but the interaction had been priceless. She looked up to see who made this joke, only to see Eddie Munson staring down at her chicken. He smiled when she looked at him and then walked off to find a seat.
"What was that about? Zoe asked as they walked out of the line and over to a table.
"I don't know, he was just making a joke, I guess?" Anne shrugged.
"I heard he's a total loner," Zoe said, her voice getting low as she reached across the table to talk."Yeah, so are we," Anne joked, reaching her hand out to showcase the rest of their table being empty.
"But like he has no friends, and he lives with his uncle in a trailer park because his mom left when he was young and his dad was put in jail a couple of years ago," Zoe explained, dropping her fork into her mashed potatoes."That's so sad though, and I'm pretty sure he has friends. He's the leader of the Hellfire Club," Anne said.
"And you'd know that how?" Zoe asked, she could be so sassy sometimes Anne wondered how she wasn't popular.
"He wanted a section in the school newspaper about their campaign and the club," Anne shrugged as if this was all normal.
"Did you add it?" Zoe asked disgustingly.
"Of course! It sounded interesting." Anne turned to her food and started eating.
"I heard it's satanic," Zoe continued.
"Why are we even talking about this? I thought you said this year we wouldn't focus on boys?" Anne almost cut her off. This conversation was seemingly angering Anne. It wasn't like she liked Eddie, but talking bad about him was rude."Yeah yeah. Boys suck. No way am I gonna have a boyfriend," Zoe admitted proudly.
After finishing their lunch, they wandered around the perimeters of the school. They stopped by the east door, leaning against the wall. Zoe was tuning into the daily drama buzzing around the yard.
"Is that your brother with Caroline Halfield?" Zoe nearly shouted out of nowhere. Anne turned to look. Sure enough, he was leaning against a tree snogging the blonde bitch in Anne's Chemistry class.
"That's fucking disgusting," Anne said, making gagging sounds. They both burst out laughing as Anne continued to make fun of her brother.
"What the hell are you two losers giggling at?" a voice interrupted their humorous moment. Turning to look, Jason Carver and his gang of basketball boys stood there sneering.
Zoe stepped forward instantly.
"What the hell do you want?" she said."Woah, I don't mean any trouble Shortcake," Jason mocked, holding his hands up to which his goons laughed.
"Jason, do me a favour and go fuck a bed of nails already," Zoe spat. Then she stuck her middle finger in her mouth and flung it out, making a pop sound. She grabbed Anne's arm and stormed off with her.
"Was that really necessary?" Anne said, pulling on her arm to stop the two of them.
