The fighting began just as I had thought it would, maybe not as immediately as I thought, but it came. The government didn't take it lying down anymore, and there was a nationwide manhunt for us all. A hunt that was soon to be over. I had gone through with the plan as Erik advised, which caused this all. I came to realize amid my self-pity and anger, a lot of this was possible because of me.
Erik had dragged us to what seemed like the front line. In the middle of it all, fighting it off amidst the streets of New York. The scene was horrific. Buildings had crashed, cars left on the streets, and bodies laid on the street. All signs of life had come to a stop. It was man devouring man, and when you're in the middle of it all, feeling so insignificant, you really can't tell whose winning.
I was exhausted, however. Blood smeared all over me, my face, my clothes. I was stained red. I never liked using a gun, so my hand gripped tightly around a police baton I stole from one of the men I had killed that day. I wouldn't have needed it that much, but I had it in case someone caught me off guard with my powers. Or I wasn't able to get into their minds. This was very possible, because, like Magneto in these violent scenes, they wore a helmet on their heads too. Physical violence had taken its toll.
The last man I could see for miles, had me cornered in an alleyway, away from it all. We had been chasing each other around for some time, and I seemed to give him the easier way out. One would say I didn't stand a chance. My back was pressed against a wet wall, and as he approached he aimed his gun right to the level of my eyes. My physical energy had worn out long ago, and I struggled to even care in this situation. My head gently leaned against the wall, catching my breath as my lungs stung with every inhale. No remarks were exchanged. It was clear to us all we only ever saw each other as prey. Within a matter of seconds, he fired his gun. The bullets scattered over me, landing on my cheek, and mainly my shoulders took the fall. Except he didn't plan on me to spit the bullets out. He watched as my skin pushed the metal objects out of my flesh, immediately covering the bloodied wounds with scar tissue. His eyes widened and his mouth hung open, a new fear unlocking in his gaze.
I had just caught my breath, the last of my energy used to heal me and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to run anymore but I knew I had no other choice.
"Give me a break." I breathed out heavily, my mind focused on him, watching that familiar glazed-over look in the stranger's eyes. A simple command was all it took, and I watched as he brought the gun up to his head.
The man fell in front of me, dropping dead like a fly. I frantically moved to the entry of the alleyway, checking if the coast was clear. I didn't see anyone, the streets looked like a scene from an apocalypse. The distant sounds of fighting and gun firing filled my eyes.
And just as I had thought that year ago, it had gone too far. If I didn't run now, I never would.
Like I was being watched, as soon as I broke into a run, I heard the dreadful voice of Erik calling out to me, looking for me from a distance. But I ran, to the nearest vehicle I could start, or had keys left in them. I ignored his calls until he seemed a close enough distance, and I knew he had broken into a run after me. I was scared. His tricks wouldn't work on me anymore. His charm had run out.
I threw myself into a car parked on the side of the road, fumbling with the keys left in the ignition to start the engine. I watched as Erik was catching up to me. Only seconds away from the car, but I floored it before he could even get to me. I prayed I'd make a quicker escape until he would flip the car over with me in it.
