"I'll throw you a bone, Sir Royal. I'll agree to your offer on one condition."
He called me Sir, not boy nor Royal. He now sees me as a business partner and that is what I was looking for this whole time. Not some random new employee that would be of his use. I will be making my rules and following them how I wish.
Eric's conditions were laid out before me, and I listened attentively, considering each one carefully. Loyalty to the guild and obedience to direct orders were expected, and I understood the importance of following the chain of command. The restriction on leaving the fortress without approval was a unreasonable measure to my understanding but it was too ensure the safety and security of the guild's operations. But it was his final condition that caught my attention—the offer to nullify his previous conditions through a one-on-one combat duel.
"Are you saying that I must defeat you in a sword duel?" I asked, my voice steady and determined.
"Indeed," Eric confirmed, a glimmer of excitement in his silver eyes. He was fully prepared for the challenge that lay ahead.
"To make things more enticing for you, I will reveal a rumor about the man you're searching for if you win," he added, his words luring me in with the promise of valuable information. "I'm quite certain you've not heard of this information."
My composure wavered, and my poker face cracked. The prospect of obtaining new information about the elusive figure I sought was enticing, and I found myself drawn to the opportunity. However, I had to remind myself of the risks involved. Accepting this duel meant potentially facing a formidable opponent, one who had earned the title of the guild leader.
Despite the uncertainties, my determination resurfaced. I couldn't back down now, not when victory could bring me closer to unraveling the mysteries surrounding Hunter's disappearance.
"Very well, Eric Von Dues," I said, my voice firm and resolute. "I accept your challenge. If I emerge victorious in our duel, I expect you to fulfill your end of the agreement and share the rumored information with me."
"Royal shouldn't you think about this a bit more?!" Cloudy handed me one last chance at backing out but I wasn't taking that chance and ran straight forward unwilling to stop.
A sense of anticipation filled the room as our agreement was sealed, setting the stage for a clash that would test my skills, resolve, and the path I had chosen to follow.
With Eric standing tall before me, his presence looming over my figure, I couldn't help but feel a surge of intimidation. He commanded the room effortlessly, surpassing six feet in height, and the weight of his authority pressed against my shoulders.
"Come and stand proud at my side," he commanded, his voice carrying a hint of excitement. "I will arrange an appointment at the coliseum tomorrow. Prepare yourself and hone your skills starting today. In two days' time, thousands will gather to watch, ranging from civilians and students to adventurers and esteemed hunters."
The mention of the coliseum caught my attention. I had heard of its popularity, a venue where skilled individuals showcased their prowess in various battles. It seemed Eric intended to use this duel to gain traction and promote the fortress. While I had confidence in my abilities, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had been manipulated into this situation.
Suddenly, a realization struck me. Eric had offered this duel not just to test my skills, but also to use me as a means of gaining popularity and reaping the benefits of having a capable ally. His cunning plan had become clear to me, and I couldn't help but admire his strategic thinking. However, I couldn't let myself be a mere pawn in his game.
