"so, still texting her, huh?" pedri takes a seat next to gavi in the barcelona change room, slipping on his cleats. gavi hates the way his cheeks heat up at his best friend's comment. he tucks his phone away into the pocket of his shorts, shifting his attention to the elder.

"yeah," gavi replies flippantly. "we text here and there. she said good luck for today's game."

"that's cute." pedri lapses into silence, staring at gavi for a moment.

gavi shifts awkwardly in his seat. "what?"

"wipe that stupid look off your face."

gavi didn't even realise he was smiling. he tries to keep his expression neutral. "i'm not doing anything."

"you smile every time we talk about her!"

gavi crosses his arms, looks down at the floor to avoid pedri's watchful eye. "what, so i can't be happy?"

"that's not what i said," pedri points out, leaning to the side to bump shoulders with him. "so when are you gonna make a move?"

gavi shakes his head quickly. "we're just friends." the words fall short once he utters them aloud, leaving a hollow feeling in his throat.

"huh." pedri makes a noncomittal grunt, causing gavi to shoot him a weird look. pedri just keeps his eyes on gavi, waiting for more.

"anyway," gavi splutters under the scrutiny of pedri's gaze, "we can't."

"why?" pedri's sharp question of surprise rings louder than he intended.

"well for starters, we're in two different countries," gavi says, listing things off on his fingers. "and we're both busy with our careers. besides, i'm fine with how things are, and i think she is too. i don't wanna mess anything up."

pedri raises an eyebrow, unconvinced, and half-heartedly resumes lacing his boots. gavi is left to his own thoughts once more.

his mind fills with hopes of what could be, if he and azaria were just two normal teenagers.
