AND SO THERE Arizona sat, in the backseat of a Storm Par truck, heading towards an abandoned gas station to meet the others.
Her Stetson hat rested on her head, her hair flowing behind it from the wind outside. Arizona kept her eyes on the sky, already seeing the storms form. The two most noticeable ones: east and west.
As the smirk from her past formed on her lips, Arizona already knew which way to go. But she would wait to see for sure.
She took in the details of the truck Javi drove, the smell of new car, the electronics spotted everywhere. It was definitely an upgrade, but not the way they used to do it. This just seemed...fake.
Once Javi pulled into the gas station and put the truck in park, Arizona stepped out, fixing her hat on her head. Her leather boots were the first thing to make noise as they stomped on the concrete. She slammed the door shut, looping her arm through Kate's and followed after Javi.
"Bring it in, team," Javi said, stopping in front of a huge group of people all in matching uniforms. "Alright, you guys know how much I've talked about Kate and Arizona. I've never met two people with better instincts than them, they're the best."
Javi turned to the two girls, who were anxiously gripping each other. "You guys will never work with a more talented team than this one. We got PhD's from all over."
"You have the whole alphabet," Kate commented.
Arizona let out a scoff. "Yeah, it's like you're trying to collect workers like Pokémon. Gotta catch 'em all."
Javi tried hard to suppress a smile. "We're the best." He then began to walk towards a tall dude wearing sunglasses. "Except for Scott, my teammate, here. He's the only one who went to MIT, but he makes up for everything with his amazing personality."
Scott stopped chewing his gum for a split second to give a smile. Arizona gave a thin one back.
"Look, the girls will only be here for a week, so we got a lot of work to do. Prepare for the worst, but have fun, and—"
Before Javi could say more, a line of trucks and an RV came barreling through the mud, blaring music and honking their horns. On the grill of the first truck—which was gated with rusted metal—was a symbol of a tornado with horns sticking out on either side.
Arizona cringed at the sight, putting a hand on top of her hat to keep it from flying away. "What the hell is that?"
No one seemed to hear her as the crowd swarmed the trucks, their phones recording and cheering echoing through the air.
As the red truck passed by, a guy holding a phone that had a light and microphone attached to it, said, "Hey, smile man! Science is fun, right?" He pointed the phone at Arizona, who rolled her eyes and looked away.
"And who are they?" Arizona asked, her arms crossing over her chest.
"Chasers out of Arkansas," Javi sighed.
"Hillbillies with a youtube channel," Scott said, still smacking on his gum.
The cheering got louder as a man stepped out, standing on the edge of his truck and leaning on the top of the door.
Arizona had to admit, he was a pretty handsome dude, in the rustic-and-has-a-strong-accent type of way. The way his red flannel fit right around his biceps and his sunglasses made people focus on his smile.
She watched as he looked their way, tipped his Stetson hat with a smirk, and then looked down at the camera that was shoved in his face.
Arizona drew a sharp breath, and shook her head. "This is ridiculous," she muttered, walking away before anyone could stop her.
