Sophie looks into the full body mirror, trying to center the gold circlet atop her head when arms snake around her middle. Keefe comes behind her, pressing his chest against her back and placing his face on her shoulder.
"You are breathtaking." He breathes, studying Sophie in the mirror.
"Really? The dress seems like a little much for a simple meeting-" Sophie is cut off when Keefe nuzzles his face in the crook of her neck, making her cheeks go hot.
"I wasn't talking about the dress. I was talking about you." His eyes flutter closed, lashes brushing her neck. Her insides go extremely fluttery, and she feels like she can start floating any minute. Goosebumps fly down Sophie's arms.
Keefe tends to have that effect.
"But I do think the dress is stunning as well." He adds, smiling. He can definitely feel the effect he has on her.
"Well, we should probably get going if we want to get there on time. Last time we were late Emery almost popped his own head off." Sophie hates how high and breathy her voice is. Keefe pulls away, taking his warmth with him. He puts the hand that was just resting on her stomach to the back of his neck.
"If we're on time then Grady will drill me with a million questions of why I'm with you tonight." Keefe and Sophie hadn't outright told Grady and Edaline about their relationship yet, though Grady has been suspecting since the day they met. Her father already hates Keefe enough, and she wants him to start warming up to Keefe before they announce it to their friends or family.
"Maybe if you made less jokes about me being cute then he will start liking you," Sophie reminds him, putting her hands on her hips.
Keefe slides his hands over hers, pulling her close. He places a featherlight kiss to the tip of her nose. "But you are cute. And so easily teased." Keefe smirks.
Sophie rolls her eyes to try to hold in her smile.
"What if we tell them tonight?" Keefe asks, voice quiet. The smirk is wiped off his lips.
Just the thought of Grady's sneer and Edaline's goofy smile makes her head spin. "Why tonight?"
He gives a small smile that almost looks... nervous. Sophie never thought of how scared Keefe must be. This is his one shot at getting a good set of parents, since his never cared about how amazing he is.
"Well, if the Council is there, there is a good chance Grady won't get the chance to make me chop my own head off," Keefe starts, smiling sheepishly, "And we can finally get it out in the open."
Sophie adores how Keefe looks when he is nervous or fidgeting. His lips turn up only slightly, and he runs his hand through his hair to make it even more disheveled. Keefe's eyes are lit up with silent pleading, since they have been hiding their relationship for weeks.
"Don't you think it'll be fun?" Keefe whispers. "I can come up to you and do this," He presses his body up against Sophie, leaving absolutely no space between them. Sophie thinks all oxygen has been squeezed from her lungs. Keefe leans down and presses his lips softly against hers.
Everything starts to fade away until nothing matters but the boy in front of her. His hands glide up her sides until they rest on her cheeks. Sophie can feel his heartbeat as she wraps her arms around his neck.
The kiss ends all too soon, with Keefe pulling away only slightly to rest his forehead against hers.
"I think we should tell them tonight," Sophie agrees, and Keefe smiles. Really smiles.
"Thank you, Foster." He whispers, stroking his thumb up and down on her cheek.
"I think we should head there." Sophie mutters back. Keefe gives a curt nod, "Let's go tell them."
