This is from Edaline's POV!!!
Eda grabs her usual morning cup of coffee, walking over to the window with the best view of Calla's tree. That's when she spots Sophie and Keefe, sitting on the tree trunk. Sophie's head is laying on Keefe's shoulder, and her odd human trinket is plugged into her ear. Keefe is looking at Sophie, watching her sleep with an adorably caring look on his face.
Edaline smiles, noting how content her daughter looks. She's always like that around that boy. He keeps her calm and happy, and she does the same to him.
"Grady, come look." Edaline whispers, beckoning her husband over.
Grady walks beside her, looking outside the window. His eyes are frantically twitching from Keefe to Sophie. He lets out a sigh, "She's so comfortable with him it's frightening."
Edaline nudges him with her elbow, "She's happy. And just look at how Keefe is staring at her." Eda points a finger toward him, and Grady squints his eyes, examining closer. He sighs again, closing his eyes, "They really do love each other. You know what's really scary, though?"
"That Keefe might marry that girl and take her away from you?" Edaline teases.
"That's how Brant looked at Jolie."
Eda is robbed of her breath, and she already feels tears stinging her eyes. Brant did used to look at Jolie like that, and he was extremely romantic with her as well. Brant wrote love letters and bought her gifts, and Keefe paints and draws for Sophie. It is frightening.
Edaline squeezes her eyes shut, wishing the pictures of Brant would go away, "Keefe is different."
"How, Eda? You see all the similarities, don't you? Remember when that boy snuck off to the Neverseen, the group trying to kill out little girl? He can't be trusted, or the story will repeat itself!"
"No it won't,"
Grady must have heard the frustration and fear building up in her voice, because his gaze softens, "I just don't want to see Soph hurt. The parallels are right there, and I'm reminded of them every single time they look at each other-"
"Grady."
"Every single time that boy shows up here-"
"Grady."
"What?"
"Look." Edaline points her chin to where Sophie is laughing uncontrollably, Keefe grinning and looking at her with those eyes. Her daughter says something that makes Keefe snort, and they laugh and laugh together. "I don't remember Jolie and Brant looking like that, do you?"
Grady pauses, gaze still stuck on Sophie, "No, I don't. But-" His voice breaks, "But Jolie was involved with the same group. I can't... I can't let that happen again!"
"We won't let it happen, Grady."
Edaline looks to where the kids are now walking toward the door, and a second later her daughter is wrapping her in a hug, "Hey, Mom."
"Hey... Sophie." Edaline blinks her tears back. "Were you and Keefe having a good time?"
Keefe walks over, putting an arm around Sophie's shoulders, "Oh yeah. Foster was showing me that human music she listens to,"
"And he liked it, he just won't admit it." Sophie grins, nudging Keefe in his ribs. Just like Edaline does with Grady.
Keefe sighs, "Fine. The human music was... mediocre."
"Nuh uh. You are going to say that you like human music, no matter what happens!"
Edaline smiles as they walk upstairs together. Her gaze goes back to Grady, who is watching the same view, "I just hope it's not the same as last time."
"It won't be, Grady. Trust me."
This one is short, and kinda sad. Sorry!! Go look at my other Sokeefe stuff, and make any recommendation in the comments.
