[CHAPTER 1 ]
home?
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷SHE QUICKLY STEPPED off the ferry , the warm breeze of the Outer Banks caressing her soft tan olive skin.
It had been nearly 4 long years since she had set foot on this island, her childhood home. Though she had spent the last four years in Manhattan, a sense of longing for home had tugged at her heart, urging her to return.
As she took in the familiar sights and sounds, Amelia couldn't help but feel a tinge of disconnect. This place, once a place of comfort and belonging, now seemed to elude her. Had the city life in New York changed her more than she realized? Or was it simply the large amount of time spent away that altered her connection to her once beloved island?
Amelia's mother, Melissa Clarke, had been a force to be reckoned with in the New York legal world – a "kogue," as the locals would say, who had worked tirelessly to provide a better life for her and her daughter. It was Melissa's hard-earned success that had uprooted them from the Outer Banks, a decision Amelia never truly regretted. In Manhattan, she had thrived, basking in the acknowledgment of being "the daughter of Melissa Clarke, the best closer in the city."
Yet, within that , Amelia felt a growing sense of emptiness. She was trapped in the shadow of her mother's legacy, destined to follow in her footsteps and become a memorable lawyer, to make her mother proud. Amelia had grown up watching Melissa sacrifice everything to give her daughter a life far beyond the confines of the Outer Banks, and she felt an overwhelming sense of obligation to honor that sacrifice.
But as she stood on the familiar sandy shores, Amelia couldn't help but question the path that had been laid out for her. The corporate world, the endless deals, the 24/7 unavailability – it all felt like a suffocating cage, lacking of true purpose and happiness.
After months of pleading , Amelia had finally convinced her mother to allow her to have a gap year, a chance to return to her beginnings and find the answers she seeked about her future.
Among the reasons for her homecoming was a deep desire to reconnect with her younger half-brother, JJ Maybank. A known mischievous "pogue," JJ had been someone Melissa had been reluctant to let Amelia grow up around, he was usually always getting himself into trouble and the sherrifs department was basically his second home.Yet, as Amelia scanned the familiar faces staring at her intensely, there stood JJ, his once platinum blonde hair now grown out, his features more defined.way taller than he once was.
"well well well , if it isn't ms manhattan herself!" JJ yelled excitedly , not hesitant to grab his half-sister into a tight hug.him practically choking her emphasized how much the boy had missed his elder sister.
"still living at the sheriffs department Jayj?" she questioned sarcastically , causing for the siblings to both let out a slight giggle.
behind the Maybank boy stood three teenagers.John B , who was practically family to the siblings.and although JJ and Amelia went to different schools , they both got along really well with the Routledge boy ever since third grade. Next to him was Pope Heyward , who was one of Amelia's best friends since kindergarten , the pair went to the same kindergarten and were practically inseperable after then. Although in the beginning it was usually Ami , JJ and John B at first , Pope was very quick to join the trio.
