The house was empty.

A two story, made for a family that loved and cared for each other deeply. In each room, they held the dwelling to sleep or to live, to eat or to rest. Every single inch of this home was made for peace.

Laughter, yelps of joy. Screams.

But now, in the house that held such fond moments, stood nothing but silence.

A man, now turned to forever be damned, crept to the adjarred door. His new senses called out to the sudden void of energy.

The quiet daughter, her name that was like sweet honey on your tongue, was the love of this man's life. She shone like the sun that now repulsed him, spoke like the tune of the angels that reside in heaven. First meeting each other was almost an instant connection of two souls, forgiving of any transgression and loving of every flaw.

He knew this house very well. Walked its path behind the children that ran in the rooms they knew that was not allowed, side by side in the hallway with the father that explained the importance of respect for each other, and in the secret corners of a bedroom where quick, fervent kisses were exchanged.

Yes, he had known this house.

Everything in this man's body told him that something was very wrong. The first step into the foyer brought forth the sight of indescribable horrors. Mangled beyond recognition, he swallowed what he could in his near dry mouth. The home that was once here, was gone. The stench of blood was strong for the new monster of night as he coughed.

Terror gripped his heart as he realized the majority of this family were present in the parlor, but there was one missing.

Adrenaline filled himself as he went through each room, calling out a name that he had whispered in sweetness so many times. He cried out for her, trudging up the stairs and tore through each room, hoping to find her alive and scared under sheets.

As he entered the last room, the one that belonged to her, a deep guttural scream to the heavens erupted from his body. In an instant, he had her in his arms, begging for a God he would never see to bring her back to him, allow her to wrap his arms around her waist in a loving kiss.

No, no, no, he cried.

But her arms laid on her side, her vessel intact other than the blood that seeped from her gentle head. The man cradled her face in his hands, trying to remember the beautiful face that had looked upon him in the purest love that anyone can give. Never would he want to leave her, to part from her. But she was no longer here, a soul released.

He tried to remember.

Small blood droplets fell onto her face, and with a gasp, the man realized they were from himself, from his own eyes. It was then he realized that deciding upon this new life came with a price.

To this day, he kept the ultimate lesson embedded in his chest, where his hatred for humanity stayed planted...

You gasped awake, shooting up in your dark apartment. The sounds of the streets below replied back to you with a yell of their own. It was the same nightmare, the same scenario that you could no longer forget.

You still felt the touch of someone's hand on your cheek, bringing your own to your face. No face, just the gentle digits of someone caressing your face.

Looking at your phone on your nightstand, the time had read the same as every time you had this dream. As your heart slowed, you brought yourself back to your bed, laying your weary head on the indented pillow. Sleep was needed here soon, your shift starting early due to a company meeting discussing the plan for the New Year for the newspaper.

In due time, this dream would go away. A couple months would go by, and not a single reference to it. Just the pleasant ones with scenarios of visiting your family or a dream vacation.

You loved those dreams.

What you did miss, and something you wished could be carried to brighter dreams, would be that tender touch on your cheek.

But it was just a wish.
