_-{Year 847: The Test}-_
F/N woke up in a cold sweat, hands balled up, tugging at the sheets, like he'd been fighting. Couldn't seem to the remember the dream, but it was probably for the better. That's what he thought at least, while rubbing his pounding temple. Out of habit he reached for his pocket, only to remember nothing's there anymore. He internally groaned, both at his own stupidity which is now coming back to bite him, and the fact that it's almost morning. The sun is just peaking in through the blinds, which means in about thirty minutes from now, Sadies will bust through the door and march them all out for the aptitude test.
Deciding to get moving, he quietly crept out of the men's barracks and down the porch stairs. Luckily I got a bottom bunk by the window, he thought happily, until remembering that when Sadies breaks down the door he'll be closest to the yelling. Either way, he trudged across the divot towards the bathhouse. With a yawn he opened the door and stripped down his clothes, then turned on the faucet for a quick shower. His bare, blistered feet stung from the cold water. Only two blisters. Guess they got calloused enough on the way here.
A few minutes later he was already out, back at the barracks, getting dressed in his cadet uniform. By then a few other cadets had woken up, but the only one he knew was Reiner so no one bothered talking to him.
The next hour passed uneventfully, eating breakfast and sharing portion's with Sasha. Reiner came to say hello as well. They seemed like nice people. Soon it was already time for the test, and F/N didn't feel the least bit nervous. Hell if I didn't have faith in my own balance I wouldn't have got recruited at all, he said to himself. Most people passed, but around a quarter couldn't balance and ended up either face planting or hanging upside down. The latter was currently happening to a boy named Eren. His face screamed out in anguish, bewildered. F/N felt bad for him. The boy came from Shiganshina, and sure is fueled by some sort of hatred that lead him here.
"F/N L/N! You're up!" One of the corps men called.
"Good luck F/N!" Sasha cheered from behind, and Reiner gave nod.
"Pfft, luck, come on. If little Connie could do it, it can't be that hard." He waved back dismissively.
"Can't wait to see you upside down!" Sasha remarked sarcastically as F/N got strapped in.
"Going up!" The man called, as the spinning of gears slowly wound the wires. After ten seconds he was up in the air, and man was it a weird feeling. Sure enough, it was easy to balance, and he even swung a little bit back and forth. Then he went faster, until he lost balance on the high end of his swing and ended up upside down. Do stupid shit, win stupid prizes, he muttered, as the commandment walked over.
"Cadet F/N L/N! Why are you hanging upside down!?"
"Apologies, sir!" He saluted. "I was merely swinging and lost my balance!"
"Are you saying this simple task is too hard for you, cadet!?" He growled.
"No, sir! Merely the opposite!"
"Then straighten yourself back up right now and prove it!"
"Yes, sir!" He rocked back and forth, wiggling and using all his core strength to try and straighten up. Behind Sadies erupted stifled laughter, and the cadet's face went red.
"Hm, it seems you have some skill after all!" He yelled after watching the boy barely manage to get up, face puffed red from exertion.
"Not skill, sir. Just talent!"
He turned back with a deathly stare. "Cadet L/N, it seems you have a talent for pissing me off... That or you have a skill for running! Lower L/N! He has laps to run! Five of them, and once you come back you can educate me on the difference!"
