Sadie sat lonely in her cell. She ached and felt sick constantly. The drug that had been forced into her system had been there for a week now and was starting to act nastily. Her body was rejecting it and Karlson was threatening to put in more. She knew she couldn't take it anymore but still growled back the same response.
"Why don't you just kill me? I'm no use to you!"
"That can be arranged" He would always reply the same thing, taunting her.
To him killing her would be merciful. Then she wouldn't have to live in this damned war and suffer the tortures he so thoroughly enjoyed. At least it looked like he enjoyed it.The information he wanted was the position of the platoon that got her here. A small group of British soldiers had landed their boat with her and she had travelled with them for a while. Karlson wasn't going to find out where they were. At least there was no point. They were already dead.
She felt herself lurch at the memory but swallowed it before sitting back and trying to breathe. She focused on her heart beat and let herself rest for a moment. She wanted the world to go back to normal. She wished she hadn't been captured. She needed to get out, but there was no chance of escape from this hell. Karlson was right. She didn't need to die to go to hell. Hell would be paradise to this place.
Her thoughts were roughly interrupted by the shrieking of the door to her cell. She sat up and stared at the man who had just come in. He stared at her with recognition and then faltered for a moment. His face then went hard and he motioned for her to get up. He had blue eyes and dark hair. His collar read Michaells. She looked him up and down, deciding not to try anything and got up. He looked happier that she did. He said the short words, 'Follow me' before marching down the corridor. Once in a while they had to let her out to get some fresh air or she would 'go mad enough to try something' which in a way made sense to her. Staring at a dirtied concrete wall for a week isn't something that goes in the category 'fun'.
They made it outside to a guarded fence, and she was put inside. There were about 15 other people there from different places, such as China, Australia and Russia. Really only the major places that survived. You wouldn't expect to find anyone else here. She looked around for some place to sit and saw an uninhabited corner. Walking over, she saw a slightly less damp part of the ground and sat down, trying to make the world stop spinning.
For a while she was bored, staring cautiously at others in this cage. She was making note of some characters we would try and avoid before she overheard someone talking. She peeked her head over the side.
"You look deep in thought Tom." Looking over the small wall, peering through the chain link fence, Sadie saw there was a blonde buff guy stood over a smaller slim man. She recognised him as the man who had just taken her over here. She had recognised him as the man from the truck who had sat across from her, staring. Also from the torture chamber, that's what Sadie had come to call it. He was a captain now.
"Charlie. When did you slink up?" The dark haired man was speaking. Michaells. She remember from his name tag.
"I thought you saw me, cause you were looking in my direction. Whatcha thinkin 'bout?" The blonde who Sadie assumed was Charlie spoke.
"Just...where do you think I would be if I weren't here?" Sadie was confused. She didn't think these oafs could think for themselves. Most of them seemed mindless. In the brief pause Sadie thought about this question.
Why is he thinking about that? Isn't he proud he fights for his country? He got promoted about a week ago by Karlson himself. She had been there and the guy seemed to be happy. In some sort of way at least. Maybe she had been mistaken. Thinking back, he hadn't shaken Karlsons hand. In a way, he had kind of risked a lot doing that. Karlson wasn't the sort to take disrespect. They continued their chat.
"Dead." Charlie wasn't wrong. But Sadie felt that wasn't the answer Michaells was looking for.
"No. If the war never happened" Was this man seriously human after all? Does he hate war? Sadie leaned in to listen to more.
"Tommy Boy, I have no idea"
"Stop calling me that." Sadie thought they seemed like two best friends fighting over a toy, one talking about something the other doesn't understand. It was slightly amusing.
"No." She thought he was childish for that, but enjoyed the dynamic of their relationship. "Tom, you should stop worrying about what could've been and start living in the now. Not in that small brain of yours." The guy knocked on 'Toms' head. He swiftly pushed him off. Definitely best friends, probably for a long time.
"Sometimes my head is where I can feel sane. Feel safe."
