i wake up to the sound of a text message on my phone.
its emilia.
"hey reece, sorry to text you so late but could you and autumn come visit me this weekend? dad and siobhan are arguing again and it's getting really bad. love you x"
the brightness of my phone almost blinds me, so i turn the brightness down.
"of course, i'll text aut as soon as possible. did you want to go somewhere for lunch or dinner? its on me x"
as i wait for a text back, marjorie wakes up.
"babe it's 2 in the morning why are you awake?" she says sleepily.
"i don't know" i say.
"well go back to sleep darling, we've got work later"
i still get no text back, so i try and go to sleep.
i can't stop thinking about how hard it must be at home, for emilia. with our dad and siobhan arguing, it's gotta be pretty tough for her.

i can't get back to sleep. so i get out of bed and head over to the kitchen. i grab a glass out of the cupboard, then go over to the fridge where i get some water and ice. i make my way over to the dining table when i hear footsteps.
"reece? darling? are you do- oh there you are. babe why aren't you asleep?"
"i can't get to sleep"
"is there a reason"
"not really"
"okay well i'm going to make myself a cuppa."
"alright"
my phone pings again, its emilia.

"yes please, i'd love to go out for lunch/ dinner. you sure aut would come?"
i reply:
"yes, if there's wine available"

"anyways, how are you? i heard you got a girlfriend.. not mia this time? x"
"emilia."
"what? you were together longer than i've been alive reece. anywho, tell me about her!! x"
"well, she's called marjorie, she's 36, she also happens to be the manager of the other nursery too x"
"aww. so happy for you. i must meet her someday!! x"
"maybe soon love x"
even though i have a girlfriend, the only, ONLY person i call love is emilia. it started when she said her first word. which was to me by the way. it was "love". since then i have always called her love. whilst emilia is only 14, which is quite the age gap; considering me and autumn are 38 and 35, we have a 14 year old sister.

-time skip to work.-

i pull up in the car park at the sister nursery to drop marjorie off, when i see autumn's car. i walk in with marjorie and see autumn already sat down in the office.
"bye babe see you later" marjorie says
"bye, love you" i say
"oh aut i was meant to text you, emilia needs to see us this weekend, i was wondering if you wanted to come to lunch with us, and before you ask there will be wine and i'm paying."
"of course, how about saturday, well tomorrow."
"that's fine i'll text her now"
"i'm sorry— who is emilia?"
"oh christ." i say. "emilia is our sister"
"sister..?"
"yeah. we don't bring her up since our father usually ends up in the conversation"
"what?? how old is she??"
"14." i say.
"but your mum?? she left before that?"
"our father had a small relationship with a woman, who gave emilia to our father after she gave birth and left." autumn says
"oh my god." marjorie says, "so i'm guessing she lives with your dad and siobhan?"
"yeah, she hates it." i say.
