7. NEFERTEM
꧂
A bunch of nefertem flowers.
According to legend, on the midsummer night when the nefertem blooms, an immortal dreams of the person he will mate with in eternal time. He finds the person in his dream that night, leaves a nefertem in his room and announces that he has found him. And he shouts his eternal mate to the whole universe.
Out of the corner of my eye I looked through the open door, but I could see nothing but flickering lights. It was midnight. The dance performances would not have ended yet, so I could hear the music a little. When I went back into the room with the flower in my hand, I thought there might be a mistake.
In a far, far, far corner of my mind, I tried to erase this thought from my mind, even though there was a possibility that that flower might have been left for me. It was not possible. I was a mortal and it was almost impossible for a mortal to be soul mates with an immortal. Leonas told me that just today. Leonas. Maybe he was just messing with me. And he should have put this flower here.
Holding the flower in my hand, I looked out of my window overlooking the garden. There were hundreds of Half-bloods dancing under colourful lights. Beings whose existence I did not know before and with whom I had been together for a few days. Even though I continued to hold the flower in my hand, this confusion clouded my mind. I had to ask him. Maybe I could watch the dance performance from a distance and get a chance to talk to Leonas after I saw him. Without getting dressed, I went out into the garden with the flower tucked to one side of my ear. I tried not to be seen by walking along the edge of the trees and away from the lights.
When I got near the dance floor, I heard the screams of the crowded groups and the whispers of dancing couples. I looked for Leonas among them, but he was nowhere to be seen. I wondered where he could have disappeared to.
I glanced at the couples on the dance floor, trying to find Leonas, but when my eyes fell on the couple dancing in the centre, at the back of the crowd, I just stood there. It was Arlen and Rina. They looked like a favourite couple. When I saw their dance harmony, I couldn't take my eyes off them. They were harmonious, they were equal. There was nothing absurd or meaningless in this scene. However, there was something I didn't feel comfortable with and I didn't want to see it. I watched Arlen before I took my eyes off them. Although I didn't think he could choose me from my position, his big eyes almost met mine.
He looked happy with Rina in his arms, but when he saw me, his expression flattened and his brow furrowed. It was like he was shouting that I shouldn't be here. So be it. When I ran out of there without wasting time, I didn't even hesitate to enter the room. I thought it was the least I could do so that my presence wouldn't disturb them.
