Yujin and Jake had been best friends since kindergarten. They were inseparable, sharing secrets, dreams, and endless laughter. Yujin had always admired Jake's easygoing nature, his infectious smile, and his kind heart. Over the years, her admiration blossomed into something deeper, a love that she kept hidden, afraid to risk their friendship.

One sunny afternoon, as they sat on their usual bench by the lake, Yujin finally decided to confess her feelings. "Jake" she began, her voice trembling, "I... I think I'm in love with you."

Jake, caught off guard, stared at her with wide eyes. "Yujin, I... I don't know what to say."

"It's okay if you don't feel the same way," Yujin said, her voice cracking. "I just had to tell you."

"No, it's not that," Jake said, his brow furrowed. "I just... I never thought of you like that."

Yujin's heart sank. "I understand," she whispered, forcing a smile.

They sat in silence for a long time, the only sound the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore. Yujin felt a deep ache in her chest, a pain that she had never known before.

"Yujin, I'm so sorry," Jake said, finally breaking the silence. "I don't want to lose you. You're my best friend."

"I know," Yujin said, her voice barely a whisper. "I wouldn't want to lose you either."

They continued to be friends, but the unspoken tension hung heavy between them. Yujin tried to act normal, but her heart ached with every shared laugh, every casual touch.

One day, Jake introduced Yujin to his new girlfriend, Liz. Jake smiled brightly, but inside, she felt like her world was crumbling. She watched as Jake and Liz laughed together, their hands intertwined, and she realized that her love for him would always be unrequited.

Years passed, and Yujin eventually found love with someone else. But she never forgot Jake, the boy who had held her heart captive.

One rainy evening, Yujin received a call from Jake. He told her that Liz had left him, and he was heartbroken. He asked if they could meet, hoping for some comfort from his old friend.

Yujin agreed, her heart filled with a bittersweet mix of sympathy and longing. They met at their usual spot by the lake, the rain falling softly around them.

"I'm so sorry, Yujin," Jake said, his voice choked with emotion. "I know I messed up. I should have seen what I had with you."

Yujin looked at him, her eyes filled with tears. "It's okay, Jake," she said softly. "We can't change the past."

They sat in silence, the rain washing away the years of unspoken feelings. As they parted ways, Yujin knew that their friendship would never be the same. The love she had held for him, though unrequited, would forever be a part of her, a reminder of a love lost, a love that could never be.
