The day of Jesse's third birthday had arrived, and Katherine was bustling around their apartment, making final preparations for the party. Joey was right by her side, helping set up decorations and arranging the food.
"Everything looks fantastic," Joey said, hanging a banner that read "Happy Birthday, Jesse!" across the living room. "I think he's going to love it."
Katherine wiped her hands on a dish towel, looking around at the colorful balloons and streamers. "I hope so. He's been so excited about this party."
Joey reached over and squeezed her hand. "You've done an amazing job, Kat. Jesse's a lucky kid to have you as his mom."
Katherine smiled, her heart swelling with appreciation. "And he's lucky to have you in his life."
As the party got underway, Jesse's friends and their parents arrived, filling the apartment with laughter and chatter. Joey was in his element, playing games with the kids and making sure everyone was having a good time.
"Okay, everyone, gather around for the piñata!" Joey called out, holding up a colorful paper mache star.
Jesse's eyes widened with excitement. "I go first, Joey?"
"Absolutely," Joey said, handing Jesse a plastic bat. "Give it your best shot."
With a determined swing, Jesse struck the piñata, and candy began to spill out, causing cheers from the kids. Joey and Katherine watched with amusement as Jesse's friends scrambled for treats, their laughter echoing through the room.
Later, as Jesse sat with cake smeared on his face, Joey leaned over and whispered to Katherine, "This has been one of the best days ever."
Katherine nodded, her eyes reflecting the joy of the moment. "It really has. Thank you for making it so special."
Joey kissed her softly, his heart full. "Anything for you and Jesse."
As the party wound down and the last guests left, Katherine and Joey sat together, tired but happy. Jesse, now in his pajamas, was curled up on the couch, exhausted but content.
Katherine looked over at Joey, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Today was perfect. I couldn't have done it without you."
Joey took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I'm just glad to be a part of it. Here's to many more birthdays with you and Jesse."
They shared a quiet moment, savoring the happiness of the day, knowing that their bond was growing stronger with each passing moment.
