Chapter 18 - A New Surprise

The winter chill had settled over New York, blanketing the city in a crisp layer of snow. Central Perk had taken on a festive air, with twinkling lights and holiday decorations adding a touch of cheer to the café. Katherine and Joey's life together had settled into a comforting routine. Joey had embraced his role as Jesse's father with all the enthusiasm and love he could muster, and Katherine's café had become a beloved neighborhood spot, bustling with the familiar faces of their friends.

On this particular snowy afternoon, Katherine was wrapping up work at the café. The holiday season was in full swing, and Central Perk was filled with the warm aroma of coffee and the soft hum of holiday music. As Katherine wiped down the counter, she felt a familiar flutter of excitement—today was a day she had been looking forward to for weeks.

"Hey, Kat," Rachel called out from behind the counter, where she was helping with the holiday rush. "You're looking pretty happy today. What's up?"

Katherine smiled, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "Oh, it's nothing much. Just had a great day and was thinking about the holiday plans."

Rachel, who was always quick to pick up on any hint of excitement, leaned in with curiosity. "You sure it's nothing? You've got that glow—like, 'I've got a secret' glow."

Katherine laughed, feeling her cheeks warm. "Well, actually, I do have some news, but I wanted to share it with Joey first. I just got back from the doctor."

Rachel raised an eyebrow, her interest piqued. "Doctor? That sounds pretty serious. Are you okay?"

Katherine nodded. "I'm fine. More than fine, actually. I think I might have some news that'll be a big surprise for Joey and Jesse."

Rachel's eyes widened in excitement. "Oh my gosh, you're not—"

Katherine held up a hand, cutting off Rachel's speculative questions. "I don't want to say too much yet. I want to wait until I can tell Joey and Jesse together. It's just that the doctor confirmed something really wonderful today."

Rachel grinned. "Well, now you've got me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait to hear the news!"

Katherine gave Rachel a quick hug. "Thanks, Rachel. I'll let you know as soon as I can."

After finishing up at Central Perk, Katherine made her way home, her heart pounding with excitement. She had been dreaming of this moment and wanted it to be perfect. Joey was due home from his acting class soon, and she wanted to have everything ready.

As she arrived at their apartment, Katherine took a moment to gather her thoughts. She had picked up a few small gifts for Joey and Jesse—tiny hints of the exciting news she was about to share. One of the gifts was a "World's Greatest Dad" mug, and the other was a small toy with the message "Big Brother" on it. She hoped these would help convey the joyous news in a meaningful way.

Joey walked in the door, his face lighting up when he saw Katherine. "Hey, beautiful! How was your day?" he asked, giving her a warm hug.

Katherine took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "It was good. I had a busy day at the café, but I'm really excited about something. I have a surprise for you."

Joey's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "A surprise? You're really good at keeping me on my toes. What's up?"

Katherine smiled and guided Joey to the couch. "Sit down. I want to make sure you're comfortable for this."

Joey sat, looking at Katherine with a mixture of anticipation and affection. "Okay, I'm all ears. What's going on?"

Katherine took out the gifts and handed them to Joey. "I thought you might like these. They're a little something to show how much I appreciate everything you've done for us."

Joey looked at the gifts, a puzzled expression crossing his face. "Wow, these are great. But why the sudden gifts?"

Katherine's eyes softened. "Well, Joey, it's because I've got something really special to tell you. I went to the doctor today, and we've got a new addition to our family coming soon."

Joey's eyes widened as he looked at Katherine, trying to process her words. "What do you mean a new addition?"

Katherine nodded, her heart racing with excitement. "Joey. I'm pregnant."

Joey stared at her for a moment, his mouth slightly agape. "Pregnant? Are you serious?"

Katherine nodded, her smile growing wider. "Yes, Joey. We're going to have a baby. I wanted to tell you and Jesse together, but I couldn't wait any longer."

Joey's face broke into a wide grin. "Oh my god, Kat! This is amazing! I can't believe it!"

Katherine laughed, her eyes filling with tears of joy. "I know. I'm so excited, and I hope you are too."

Joey jumped up from the couch, lifting Katherine into a joyous embrace. "This is the best news ever! I'm going to be a dad again! And Jesse's going to be a big brother!"

Katherine held onto Joey, her heart swelling with happiness. "I wanted to make sure we could celebrate this together. I thought the gifts might help make the news a little more fun."

Joey set Katherine down gently and looked at the gifts, then at her. "This is incredible. I can't wait to tell Jesse. He's going to be so excited!"

At that moment, Jesse wandered into the room, his face bright with curiosity. "What's going on, Mommy? Why is Joey so happy?"

Joey knelt down to Jesse's level, holding out the "Big Brother" toy. "Hey, Jesse. I've got something special for you."

Jesse's eyes widened as he looked at the toy. "Big Brother? What's that mean?"

Joey smiled, his voice filled with warmth. "It means that you're going to be a big brother. Mommy and I have some exciting news—we're going to have a new baby in our family!"

Jesse's face lit up with joy. "Really? A baby? That's so cool!"

Katherine laughed, her eyes sparkling with tears of happiness. "Yes, a baby! And you're going to be the best big brother ever."

Jesse jumped up and down with excitement. "I'm going to be a big brother! This is awesome!"

Joey hugged Jesse tightly. "I'm so glad you're excited, buddy. We're going to have so much fun together."
