Relocating for work is the biggest lie of my life.
Last night I dreamt of getting lost and abandoned in Korea. Although I had a penchant for the city's culture, especially the dramas and music, I never imagined I would fit in there.
But for some reason, I felt it was a strange calling as if the city was awaiting my future to be painted.
I know that nothing is left here, not anymore. My life in London is stuck on a plateau.
I left my job, packed my life, and moved to answer my calling, Korea.
But a job wasn't the only thing I left behind. I left my friends, my family, and a traumatic scarring that needs to be healed.
Savings got dumped into a studio apartment which I have to make home.
After applying for a ton of jobs and being rejected twelve times, I finally secured one at Euphoria Tech and Security as a Junior Financial Analyst.
Luckily my office is three lanes away from my apartment. A good four thousand steps in the morning wouldn't hurt more than spending on cabs or public transport.
On my first day, to make the best impression, I arrived on time. The receptionist at the desk smiles at me after I give her my call letter, "Welcome to Euphoria Tech & Security. The HR office is on the second floor, Robert over there will assist you further."
"Thank you," I returned her a warm smile. Are people really so nice here?
The broad expanse of this modern workspace stuns me. There are ten elevators to help people scale up the fifty-storeyed building. I walk to the elevator in the center but a man stops me, "This elevator is only for the Chairman and the people who are allowed to meet him on the fiftieth floor."
"Oh."
"You can use the other elevators, mam."
"Thank you." I guess not all the mortals get to see the chairman.
I find Robert in the HR department and he helps me settle in a workspace on the seventeenth floor. "You will be trained by Annalise here for two weeks and then you are good to go."
Annalise smiles excitedly, "Hi, I am Anna."
"I am Y/n from London." Chastising myself on why I had to tell her that I came from a place where nothing was left for me, I reminded myself that I was here to start a new life, make new memories, and wiser decisions.
"I will leave you to be," Robert excuses himself.
"London huh?" She is intrigued.
I just smile and sit at my new work desk. This is where my 'new beginnings' begin.
"What brings you to Seoul, Y/n?"
I shrug, "Work!"
"I am sure London or the entire Europe for that matter of fact, has a lot more opportunities."
"Sure does but I prefer culture and novelty over opportunities. The experience I gain matters."
Anna's impressed smile makes me feel confident. Nobody knows me here, so it gives me the perfect chance to be a new me.
"Great! Let me help you set up your desktop."
Annalise told me to call her Anna and also she is very excited that she finally got someone to have lunch with and go to coffee breaks all day.
The sheer amount of women here in finance is concerning, she also warned me about the diminutive comments her male counterparts make just to belittle her work.
