Throughout life we find ourselves forming bonds with those we share certain attributes with. We call these people friends. On some occasions, these bonds, shared between a group of people, develop a status quo. The things that set you apart from your group of friends, being to define your role amongst these people. What sets you apart begins to be the reason you are included. For if you don't fit your role, you lose the part.
You long for stardom, to see your name in lights, to play the lead in the show called life. The void in your chest feels a little less empty every time the applause sounds. Applause means you did well, and your performance was accepted amongst the crowd. It means that they will return the next day, wanting to see the show you put on for them.
But as much as she dreams of awards and lead roles, that is not the part Alice Lockwood was assigned. Within her friends, Alice had taken on the role of group therapist. She was the ear that listened and the shoulder that was cried on. She could and would spend hours listening and talking her friends through their problems. She gave advice to those who needed it, encouraging them to do the right thing for themselves and each other. She pushed them to face their fears even when it seemed as though fear would win. Sometimes they didn't want to hear what Alice had to say -and she would quiet down when asked to- but, in the end, they had all found she was usually right.
It could be a taxing role, always being the one who was helping and never the one who was helped, but Alice loved it. She loved seeing her friends happy, and she would give all her time and wisdom to do it. Some might find it infuriating that their problems were never the ones discussed, but that was one of the things Alice enjoyed most about being the therapist. She loved that she could push her problems into a deep dark hole, and no one would ever dig it up. It was something that made her like her role, but not the thing that made her love it. It was the meaning of the role itself that she adored. She adored that her friends came to her for help, that they valued her opinion. Because that meant she had purpose. That she was wanted.
