"What if I go as a mouse this year? Like Karen!", the blonde said to her duo.

"Oh em gee, totally cute!", Cady said in response, while Presley nodded in approval."You know I was named after Cady Heron", she continued her storytelling as they were putting their books in their lockers.

It was like Ella's world had stopped. Because strolling down the hall, laughing brightly, was the one and only Ruby Liu.

Ella's breath hitched, and she felt the familiar sensation of tingles as Ruby approached their group.

"Hey Ella, I was looking for you", Ruby smiled whenever she talked.

Her smile.

"Oh really?", Ella replied, a bit too excited. "For practice today right? Will you still be my partner?".

"For doubles? Yeah of course", Ruby's way of speaking was so smooth. "Well just want to let you know that there's a new girl joining".

Ruby.

Ella was ripped out of her daydream once Ruby continued their conversation. "A new girl? This late?", she asked, with a disbelief attitude.

"Yeah, but I'll see you later. Bye", she left with a small head nod. She wants to see me later. Ella sighed, and her friends watched in amusement as Ella's eyes followed Ruby as she left.

The rest of the school day went on as usual.

Writing notes during English, doing makeup in history, gossiping in math, and taking online quizzes in science.

Ella's brows furrowed as she thought about the question in front of her. Could you see yourself being with someone of the same gender as you?

She clicked maybe.

Presley gasped at her action, making Ella sweat. Not really though, because Ella doesn't believe in sweating.

"What?", the blonde asked shakily.

"You put maybe!".

"Yeah...", with that response, Ella was terrified that Presley would unfriend her and tell everyone. "Girl, what do you mean maybe? I thought you were fully!".

Oh, she doesn't hate me. What. A. Relief

Wait what?

"What do you mean?", the blonde managed to squeal out. "I mean, you're like drooling for Ruby each time you see her", Presley answered, stating the fact. "Well what about the boys I've liked?", Ella argued back. "Girl. They've all been fictional".

"Well, anyway, I got soulmate au for mine, what about you?".

"Ugh I got hurt/comfort", Presley scoffed.

Moving on from finding their own fictional fanfic tropes, Ella had realized something very non-fiction about herself. And this epiphany would dawn over her for the rest of the day.

At practice, Ella watched Ruby. Ella was always into people watching, seeing how differently people behaved, and how everyone reacted to life differently. It was beautiful, to her, how complex each person is. But Ruby was on a different level. The way she carried herself, and how her expressions were always so natural, she was so effortlessly cool.

Maybe Presley is right.

Coach Solis made an announcement, grabbing everybody's attention. "Okay guys, so today we have a new student joining us. She's apparently very good so we'll need to make new teams from now on". Ugh. New teams?

And in walked a tall brunette with a low pony. There was nothing special about her really, but she wore an over-sized red uniform just to practice. That stood out to Ella.

"Guys, this is Lynn! She quit track to be here so lets all congratulate her", Mr. Solis cheered.

Huh? Who would quit track for ... this?

Ella was walking with Cady, who joined tennis just for the drama, as they did their warm-ups.

"Yeah anyway, that's what Presley said", Ella told her friend as she recounted the earlier events. "Yeah, I also thought so", Cady agreed.

So is everyone aware of this except for her?

"But I went out with that one boy for like a day", she tried to argue. "Yeah no. That wasn't real to me", Cady responded back. What the.

"Anyway, we're starting soon, so we should get into our partners". The shorter girl pouted and nodded in agreement.

Lynn was unbothered as the coach announced the new teams. She knew that she would only be paired with the best, or the second best.

She wasn't particularly excited about who her partner would be, Lynn was just hoping it would be someone competent and not one of the ditzes.

Mr. Solis announced the teams based on their skill sets or whatever, Ella wasn't really focusing.

"So, Ruby Liu and..." 

Please be me, please be me 

"..Lynn Loud, you two will be singles 2 and 3".

What? What atrocities did Ella commit in her past life that caused her not to be paired with Ruby?

And more importantly, what made Lynn Loud so great? Why was she paired with Ruby and not her?

Not only did Ella not get partnered with who she wanted, she didn't get paired at all.

Maybe she should stop praying on others' downfalls.
