The school hallway buzzed with energy as students rushed to their lockers, swapping books and conversations before heading home. Yn stood by hers, carefully organizing her textbooks while Peter shuffled through his cluttered backpack, pulling out a crumpled notebook and a few stray pens. The faint echo of laughter and distant lockers slamming filled the air around them.
"So, Petey," Yn began, her tone light but tinged with a hint of nervousness as she closed her locker, "do you want to hang out later? Maybe catch that new movie everyone's raving about. I heard it's supposed to be really good."
Peter glanced up from his bag, his expression instantly apologetic. "I can't tonight, Yn," he said, scratching the back of his neck. "I'm heading over to MJ's place. She needs help with her yard... it's a big project."
Yn's chest tightened, the words hitting harder than she expected. She forced a casual smile, but her voice betrayed a faint edge of jealousy. "Oh. You and Mary Jane seem to be spending a lot of time together these days."
Peter hesitated for a moment, catching the subtle shift in Yn's tone. His lips parted as if to speak, but instead, he settled for an awkward smile, his hand automatically adjusting his glasses—a nervous habit he hadn't quite shaken. "Yeah, well... she could really use the help. But hey, maybe when we're done, you could join us? We could all hang out."
Yn's smile was polite but faltered slightly, not quite reaching her eyes. "That's really thoughtful of you, Petey. I'm sure MJ will appreciate the help."
The conversation lingered in an awkward pause before Yn's phone buzzed in her pocket, breaking the silence. She pulled it out, glancing at the screen, and let out a small sigh—a sound laced with both relief and frustration. "Looks like my dad's here to pick me up," she said, tucking her phone back. "Guess I should get going."
Peter's expression softened into one of mild disappointment as they started walking toward the entrance together. "I guess this means our plans for the weekend might be on hold?" His tone carried a hint of hesitation, as if unsure of how to phrase his disappointment.
