Ella's POV
This morning has been wonderful! Merrick has been taking me around to all of the historical sites in Rhodes, and the experience has been nothing short of magical. We've visited so many beautiful buildings and marveled at the diverse architecture influenced by different cultures. The island truly feels like a melting pot of history and art. From the grand Monolithos Castle to the majestic Palace of the Grand Master, each place left me breathless. Merrick's knowledge about the history and hidden gems of the city was impressive and endearing. After a short trip to the picturesque Village of Lindos, we stopped for lunch, and I was glad for the rest and a chance to satiate my hunger.
Lunch was a delightful affair. Merrick and I spent the time getting to know each other better, sharing stories and laughing as we shopped for trinkets and souvenirs. Phillip, oddly enough, stayed back for most of the day, which felt unusual since he was usually by Merrick's side. His absence was noticeable, but the day continued smoothly. After lunch, we headed back to our hotel.
As we reached the front door, an odd feeling washed over all three of us, but Phillip looked the most disturbed. I saw panic flash across his face just as an unfamiliar voice called out from behind us.
"Your Grace! What a pleasant surprise to see you back in Rhodes. It's been a while, and with a new bride no less."
Turning around, I saw a large man accompanied by a slender blonde woman and three children of various ages. Phillip's eyes shot daggers at the couple, but Merrick appeared oblivious. The man bowed, showing his neck to Merrick and me, and when he lifted his head, he gave Phillip a light nod. The air was thick with tension, and it was clear that Merrick had no idea who this was, but Phillip certainly did. Without looking up, Phillip whispered the man's name in Merrick's ear.
"Ah, I am sorry, Alpha Luca Baros. I am not familiar with all of the Alphas in this part of the world, but I am glad to make your acquaintance," Merrick said, extending his hand for a shake. A small growl left Phillip, shocking everyone except Luca, who seemed to have expected it.
"I'm sorry, Your Grace. Please excuse me," Phillip muttered before stepping away.
"Alpha Luca, please excuse my guard. He has had a long day. I've been showing the Duchess around the island and doing some light shopping," Merrick remarked.
"No worries, we all have those days, Your Grace. Please allow me the honor of inviting you to our private residence while you enjoy your stay here. My wife would love to have you over for a meal." He gestured to the slender blonde next to him. "This is my mate, Iris, and our children Nico, Delia, and Tobias." They all bowed except for the youngest, Tobias, who seemed curious about his siblings' actions until a soft hand from his father patted the back of his head. "Please say you will come for an evening." He extended his hand, passing Merrick a business card. "That has my number. Just give me a call, and I can have my driver pick you up."
We said our goodbyes and headed up to our suite. Phillip paced behind us until we locked the door.
"What was that, Phillip?" Merrick demanded, his voice stern.
"I don't trust him!" Phillip replied, trying to defend his actions.
"You don't even know him! What has gotten into you?" Merrick shouted.
I could see Phillip shift uncomfortably in his seat. "I'm sorry, Your Grace," he said with a sigh. Something about this wasn't right, and I wondered what exactly was the reason for his distrust. Merrick stomped off to his room, and I took the opportunity to sneak to Phillip's room. Before I could knock, I heard him throwing things around.
A few knocks later, he came to the door, red-faced and eyes bloodshot. "Oh my goddess, Phillip, what's wrong? I'm sure Merrick didn't mean to yell at you..." I placed my hand on his shoulder to comfort him. "Do you know him?" I asked.
